The last time MH was wrong about anything was when he was in seventh grade and insisted the Marie McNamara, the junior high principal, was really a guy.

...and if course, we now need to know what method you used to verify that particular fact

Oh, simple. Marie was too mean to be of the female persuasion. But you see, that's where I was wrong. And that was the last time I was wrong.

In Minnesota the Walleye sandwich will outnumber Juicy Lucy's by a 10 to 1 margin if not more. The Juicy Lucy until the cable TV food shows lemming like started featuring it could be found in less than a half dozen Twin Cities bar/grills, if that (I could originally only name 3 a decade ago). It enjoyed a lot of popularity but is again waning.

Given that there are more boats and fishing licenses per capita in Minnesota than any other state and Walleye is the number one sport fish in Minnesota, it is understandable why the Walleye sandwich is its state sandwich and found in just about every restaurant that serves any kind of breaded fish sandwich.

I don't know. We have lots of Tay-Ko-Ree-Uhs and Tay-Ko trucks here in Ohio.

Been trying to figure out what MA sandwich is.  Not sure I agree with the Fluffernutter.  Anyone from MA eat the fluffernutter?

People from Massachusetts do eat Fluffernutter sandwiches. Most Fluffernutters are consumed by children, the rest are eaten by people remembering their childhood.

thanks BooBooBear- it's funny I was chatting with my friends who were raised in Boston and were like No way FlufferNutter is the offical sandwich for MA.  I told him there is more to MA than just Boston.  :)

Born and raised in Iowa here, the Breaded Pork Tenderloin shows up at every small town cafe and street fair.  I love me a Maid Rite, but it's not as all pervasive.

Lived in North Dakota the last 5 years.  Hands down the Indian Taco.  (More or less various taco ingredients on fry bread)  Once again, it shows up at every street fair, school menus, cafes.

There are a number of serious contenders for California's "state sandwich" - no dis to the Powerhouse, and my apologies to those of you who think tacos might substitute, or hamburgers don't warrant their own category - including the crab salad sandwich on sourdough (though mostly in SF area for a good/authentic one), the French Dip on a roll (this one mostly around LA), and the torta [with whatever preferred featured filling, but in many case pork carnitas] on a bolillo roll (which has been ubiquitous on most menus I've encountered at taquerias throughout the state). I imagine the torta would look the best splayed out on a cutting board....

For Connecticut the choice is not simple. There's the lobster roll that is a real lobster roll, not a lobster salad sandwich. And there's the steak sandwich of thinly sliced eye of the round on toast with lettuce, tomato and onion. And then there's the sub sandwich, which was, as everyone knows, named for the sandwiches made by Groton grocery store owner Benedetto Capaldo and sold  to workers building submarines just up the road. For those who are unfamiliar with submarines, they were similar in shape to a loaf of Italian bread.

MD - would be the crab cake sandwich. FAR more popular and available than the soft shell sandwich...which is actually a seasonal thing, if one wants to have MD crab.

DC - Half-Smoke. O.k., so, not exactly a sandwich, but it's bread with meat in the middle - it's related!

For NC, pulled pork is sufficient. The vinegar thing is strictly Eastern Q. Piedmont and West is all about Lexington type Q.

VA- Fish Sandwich. They love their flounder, or mahi mahi, or any sea fish, fried up and in between a bun! (At least the Eastern half of the state!) In the West, probably pulled pork.

From an objective "outsider's" perspective for Southern California, as someone traveling around other than Philippes, I didn't see a whole lot of places offering the french dip, however I did see alot of places offering the "powerhouse" style sandwich.  I still have to go with that.
