Here is the list Lee mentioned. I have absolutely no issue with #1. It would most likely be my choice, too.

I think any list looks suspicious which has one third (4 out of 12) of the selections for favorite flavor some variety of caramel. Granted, that 5 out of the 12 favorite flavors have chocolate as an ingredient, but that might be expected.

I think Capogiro, the Philadelphia gelato place that made the list, is overrated and overpriced (I think it was the most expensive place on the list). It's very popular in Philly, but I've been to gelato places in other cities that I thought were clearly better. If I were to nominate a Philadelphia ice cream parlor for the list, it would be Franklin Fountain.

I've nothing against Jeni's or Graeter's in Ohio, but as far as I'm concerned Velvet in Utica, Ohio tops both.

UM.at the risk of starting a flame war...............it may not be the Best tasting (although DAMD GOOD), the most romantic place (Not in kissy-face/huggy-poo, but location) has got to be Browns Ice cream in York Beach Maine. And the Ice Cream at Penn State's Creamery is out of this world

Big fan of Graeters, but my vote goes to Creole Creamery in NOLA. Love their flavours and the quality can't be beat.

I like both Velvet and Graeters. Recently we had Peach Cobbler at Velvet and fresh peach at Graeters. Two entirely different styles of ice cream, both delicious. Next time I'm at North Market I'll have to try Jeni's.

I vote for Ted Drewe's in St. Louis. If you go to Graeter's don't forget the whipped cream, it is amazing!

Where's The Creamery at Penn State? No list of this sort is complete without it.

We recently had guests from out of town so a trip to the North Market is a must. I finally had my first taste of Jeni's - Whiskey Pecan. It was delicious. Actually I would have preferred more ice cream and less pecans.....it was loaded but still delicious.

Everybody's got a top 10 list, and nobody can come close to trying all the ice cream places in the country (not even the Sterns). So, IMHO they are pretty meaningless. The only one I've tried is Greater's. OK, not great. I agree with those who say Northern Ohio's Handel's is better. And no ice cream sold in a store is "home-made." It's only home-made if you make it at home. So, any store that makes that claim looses points right off. And the Michigan State Dairy Store beats Penn State's Creamery.

Not surprising. It's not the ice cream that draws fellows to Amsterdam.

Bi-Rite in San Francisco rocks. If it hadn't made the list, well... it would've been nuts! One cool thing they do there is let you try a bite-size sample of a sundae combination you don't know if you want a whole one of. Seriously. They'll put all of the components on one spoon and you can taste it. Gotta love that.
