Thanks for posting this, scrumptiouschef. West Liberty was my mother's hometown, so any good news about the town's recovery is much appreciated. When I was growing up, we drove down to W.L. three or four times a year to visit family, and I have fond memories of going to Freezer Fresh for ice cream.

Sounds like you grew up in Morgan County. If so, what part? Anywhere near Caney or Cannel City, or anywhere else along KY 191?

scrumptiouschef My dad and I used to ride to W.Liberty to buy cattle gates from an Amish family. Always loved Freezer Fresh, good chili buns and friendly folks running the place. I think you might be a bit confused. Liberty, Ky, in Casey County, is considered the cattle gate capital. Just south of Liberty in the South Fork Valley, is a fairly large community of Black Bumper Mennonites and Horse & Buggy Mennonites with a very small number of actual Amish. They gave up years ago trying to explain to visitors that most of them are Mennonite and not Amish. Casey County is full of gate fabricators. West Liberty, in Morgan County, is located about 150 miles northeast of Liberty. Yeah that's right, West Liberty is east of Liberty. Go figure.

My bad. My dad saw this and already lit up the phone line to correct me. Memories of the 80s are growing dimmer by the minute.

I remember that there used to be a little place in Liberty that was similar to freezer Fresh. I don't remember the name of it, but I remember the chili dogs.

It was on the west side of the square. About 30 years ago, I helped start up a plant in Bailey's Switch, just south of Booger Mountain. A little quick Knox County story. There used to be a little restaurant on HWY 25E run by a retired Navy guy. I was in there for lunch one day with some business associates. I ordered a seafood platter and when the waitress asked me what I'd like to drink, I said, "I'd like a cold beer, but I guess I'll settle for iced tea" since Knox County is dry. To my surprise she said, "I can do that for you". She brought me a beer in a paper Pepsi cup. After drinking a bit of it, I looked over and there sat the county Sheriff a couple of tables over. He saw me spy him, and he picked up his own Pepsi cup and toasted me and gave me a big wink.

Great tale, keep em coming. Mitchell's Market {rip} had good chili buns, they shuttered after close to a hundred years of business, in the past few years. On the square, little hot food counter in the back of the grocery. Also, apparently the city just erected a big Daniel Boone statue.

They tried to market their chili to some of the super markets but it didn't catch on. I'd like to go back to Barbourville for the Daniel Boone Festival but something always keeps me from going. This year it's Oct. 7 thru the 13th. Maybe I'll make it down there.

I think Mitchell's is still in business but selling commercial tubs of the chili bun chili. I'm fresh off a trip thru the region doing research for an Eastern Kentucky Chili Bun Trail e-book, lots of good eating in that zone. Mainly fried baloney and pool hall chili.
