Watson's in old town Orange, California has been around for more than 100 years, and serves up some mean fountain treats. Check them out at: http://watsonsdrugs.com

Yes! Great idea for a thread! We need to know where these gems are! This topic though should be moved to the Ice Cream and Custards forum. The last one I know was Cairncross Chemists in downtown London, Ontario but it closed down over 25 years ago. Worst of all I'm sad to say I never patronized it, primarily because i never knew it was there. Cairncross looked like a very boring drug store from the outside. There was nothing in the window display that would have drawn a young fellow inside. I really wish now I'd dropped in on occasion.

Tastebuds in Wilmore Kentucky would fit the bill very nicely. http://bit.ly/K0OEpe My first and only visit (so far) to one of these places and it was awesome. They really crank out some great food considering how small their work area is. DT

Here in <<<Hoboken>>> Schnackenberg's has been in business since 1931. http://gigapan.com/gigapa...r+Furnishings+Building It's been hurting for a long time. Closed more than opened...and very cluttered. But...a new leaseholder just struck a deal to clean it up...and retain the charm...to bring it back to life. It's a real gem...and this is very good news.

ken8038 Also a few here in the NJ suburbs, including this one, which is now more popular than ever, for all the wrong reasons: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqpDxCo2vic I hate it when something is 'discovered"/popularized because of a movie or TV show. I guess I'm just a snob that way.

Walked in about 1/2 to the back, there was this horrible smell, like something dead or dying (Maybe Mrs. Schnackenberg...), and we turned around and walked right out. I also remember it was totally dreary in there, besides the smell. Actually, I'm amazed it's still open 5 years later.

Such a shame to have a place with such good bones...that also hinted to the rest of the corpse somewhere buried under the clutter. It will finally get its day...again! The family still owns it...so there won't be any radical changes to the good stuff...underneath the rest of the hot mess.

CCinNJ Wilensky's Light Lunch in Montreal since 1932... http://www.wilenskys.com/ Wow! I didn't know about Wilensky's. That's just a very few blocks down the street from Fairmount Bagel, another Montreal institution!

Why is this thread still in the Roadfood Get-Togethers forum? Can a moderator not move it to a forum in which it belongs?

When I was sixteen in 1956, I used to be a "soda jerk" and short order cook after school at Jahn's in Cedarhurst, L.I. New York. They are no longer there but continue to flourish in Jackson Heights, Queens, NY. It was great fun! They used to do a "Kitchen Sink" that contained about 24 huge scoops of ice cream with all the toppings in the house and could easily feed a dozen people for only $6.00. According to Wikipedia, they still offer it. For 8 people. $51.95! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jahn's
