Alphabet Game! Sat, 10/20/12 11:36 PM (permalink)
Post restaurant names in alphabetical order. Give us the location of the restaurant and maybe tell us something about it. I'll start.

The Astoria Shish Kebob House at 390 Danforth Avenue in the heart of Toronto's Greek Town:

Astoria

The menu is limited but it's all really good. The grill is located by the front window so you can watch the action from the street. Prices are very reasonable. An enormous Greek salad with garlic bread comes with each entree and is brought immediately after you order so there's really no waiting time once you order. A very generous portion of rice and roast potatoes is also included with each entree. Lighter eaters may need a doggie bag. I've been very satisfied every time I've gone.

    Fun Roadfood game!

    Buon Appetito
    906 - 908 Broadway
    Bayonne NJ

906 a fantastic Salumeria...where it all began. Sandwiches (on Altamura Bread another Bayonne Roadfood destination if I have an A at some point...it will have Roadfood moment)...hot Italian entrees to go that are almost as good as if it came from a Nonna. Can never say as good...or else.

908 is the Restaurant side...where all the entrees available in the Salumeria side are available + the fantastic pastries from a previous bakery shop they had...before they moved to this location. They also have lovely seafood dishes...and a bar.

Pick a side...any side. You can't go wrong. That's my hometown Roadfood...in the big shadow of big time NYC.

Now I have to wait for a Z.

Just beloved my locals, excellent food and service, famous for their turtle soup, trout pecan, and bread pudding souffle.  White tablecloth, and pricey, it's the kind of place some locals may not go to except for special occasions, but they have a very reasonable, 2-course lunch, your choice of soup or salad and an entree under $20.   Martinis and cosmopolitans  are .25.  I like what they call 1-1-1 where you get  3 demitasse size cups of soups, usually gumbo, turtle soup, and the soup of the day.  Emeril and Paul Prudhomme got their start here, and the restaurant has won several James Beard awards.

          Eisenberg's Sandwich Shop
          174 5th Ave.
          NYC
          http://eisenbergsnyc.com/

Who could resist a fried salami sandwich at a crowded lunch counter?

Hepcat...Eisenberg's is as close as you will get to an old-school five & dime in NYC...in terms of atmosphere - menu - price.

Gibbys Restaurant (Steakhouse) at 298 Place d'Youville in Old Montreal. Last time I visited I was so stuffed I could hardly get up from my chair. Prime steak, lobster and sides in a stone building dating back to the eighteenth century! Spectacular and highly recommended.

Gibbys...what a beautiful restaurant. I am not a cake lover (especially chocolate) but they serve a delicious version. It also has a pretty print...

I hate to spoil CC's fun.....but Hank's place in my hometown is the quintessinal RF place!  It starts with the Contractors for the early breakfast, followed by the workers in offices...later by Mommies who have dropped off kids at School.and a few late breakfast/power-coffee meetings.  Then lunch begins.  On weekends, the line starts at 6AM and goes through noon.
In years past, You'd run into Andy Wyeth having breakfast or lunch.  Assorted other local luminere's are still there.  Often you have a Mega-billion Billionaire duPont Heir sitting and chatting with a local contractor (who in this day and age may or may not be a millionaire!)

The one time Irene's Fish and Chips, a London, Ontario institution at 315 Wellington Road, which has now been remade into the New Irene's Seafood Restaurant. A purple paint job covering the chipped white paint on the outside, and replacing the formica kitchen tables on the inside with faux colonial chairs and tables, and voila, you've got a more upscale eatery with higher prices! While Irene's has thus lost much of its old school charm, the fish and chips and other seafood entrees remain top notch.

The Kalico Kitchen on the Blue Star Highway in Douglas, MI. This is the place you picture in your head when someone says "diner". Virtually their entire menu is comfort food, or fried, and their pies are to die for. Of particular interest is their biscuits and gravy...every morning they make a huge vat of sausage gravy, and they serve it until it's gone. It rarely makes it to lunch. They also welcome tour buses, and the driver always eats free.

Niki's West in Birmingham, AL.  A cafeteria-style meat and three (or enormous vegetable plate) with a dizzying array of offerings.  The place is absolutely packed out at lunch time with tons of parking all around the building.  Not all of the items are at their best in steam tables (fried okra, for instance), but Niki's a great representation of comfort dishes of the south.  My favorite pie was the lemon ice box. Could sure go for some right now.

Papa's Pizza at 117 St. George Street in London, Ontario. Just a little hole in the wall place. The pizza is good, but get the panzerotti! It's a deep fried pizza! This has been the signature dish of many of the Italian restaurants in the London area since Tony's Pizza introduced it sometime in the sixties. Every alumnus of the University of Western Ontario, one of Canada's very biggest universities, swears by London's panzerotti and Papa's is a well established neighbourhood purveyor.

While nobody can say where panzerotti first originated, I'm very confident that London exported the dish to Toronto and the rest of Ontario. I'm not sure how widespread panzerotti is in Canada outside of Ontario.

Oh the Panzarotti. . It's also a popular item in other parts of NJ...that looks a little like a calzone (popular in this part of NJ).. But if you say it looks like a deep-fried calzone or call it a calzone they are ready to run you over with a Panzarotti Turbo 350. Sheesh. It does look like a calzone. Don't tell them I said that.

                                                Q is for quandary.

When it comes to panzerotti, it's important to get one at a full fledged Italian eatery known for its pizza and panzerotti. If you get a preprepared one at a fast pizza place that sells pizza by the slice in Toronto e.g. Panzerotto Pizza, it will be disappointing. It really does have to be done right. And what's served in restaurants such as Papa's and Tony's in London is absolutely awesome! You won't believe the size of the thing when it's put in front of you and the taste lives up to the looks. The ones I've pictured are just minis. Here's a picture of one that's the right size from Louie's Pizza and Pasta in Ingersoll just east of London:

Queens, New York probably has a dozen appropriately named restaurants by itself.
