It's funny, growing up on the South shore of Long Island, we had all kinds of  storms. Including snow, blizzards, ice and hurricanes. But, I have no recollection of ever losing power.

The only time I remember a massive power outage was the summer of Son of Sam...until last year. We have PSEG and a somewhat bad storm just knocked us out as recent as September.

Sandy devastates Brooklyn's, Coney Island and surrounding areas like Sea Gate. The video is amazing.

Not sure when you left, but as I look around I see many trees that were probably fairly small, or at the very least, much younger and healthier when the last big wind hit long island back in 1985. There are or were a lot...A LOT... of old trees that simply couldn't withstand the forces that hit them. This tree damage hit some areas far from the beaches and flooding very hard on north shore and in middle of island as well.

As for Sea Gate, I always felt that was a scary place just rip[e for this kind of destruction. There were houses right on the ocean with no dunes or natural barriers. We have become very bold and built things in places they probably shouldn't be. 50+ years ago many of the communities that were devastated were summer or weekend cottages, with small shacks, not permanent residences. When we build in dangerous places, like beaches or river flood plains  these kinds of disasters are inevitable.

ChrisOC: you must have been right in the path of the storm! Is your house in good enough shape to rebuild? What a nightmare! I hear a lot about Seaside and AC, I assume OC is in just as bad a shape? Is the whole boardwalk wiped out?

Tony, to answer your question, We moved from Brooklyn to live in various towns (Rockville Center, Baldwin Harbor, and ultimately, the Five Towns) on the South shore of L.I. about 1952. I was 12 years old then.

Good news!  I have been told that a group of contractors is working on my complex and Mrs OC and I should be able to return home by Feb. 1.
We have new bedroom furniture on layaway, a new TV, a recliner for me and a rocker for Mrs OC.  O yeah and a new sleeper sofa.  It will be an adventure getting set up again.  We are just thankful that no one was injured.

Wow, Chris--Feb 1!!  What an ordeal.  I really feel for you two.  Many years ago I lost everything in Hurricane Agnes (I was living in Alexandria, VA), but as a renter I was pretty "portable" and able to find a furnished place to live near enough to work so I could walk. (I lost my car as well.)  It was quite the event in my life--I didn't even know my apt had flooded until I woke up floating (YES!!) in my bed.  It was crazy.  Anyway, it is awful to have your world turned upside down so quickly, and I'm so sorry for what you're going through.

It been 2+ months since Sandy hit. How are things progressing?
I had some very minor storm damage, a few missing shingles and some broken tree limbs. Fortunately for me the neighbor took down his diseased tree about 2 weeks before the storm.

Well,  February 1 came and went, but we have not yet been able to return to our home.  They are now projecting the end of February or the first week of March.

Not really.  We rent and there are multiple units to be redone, so it is taking some time.
