Dairy Bars!

I'd like to compile a list of dairy bars/ice cream parlours/soda fountains/lunch counters operated by dairies themselves. These would typically be adjacent to the actual dairy. I know of four:
 
1. Hewitt's Dairy Bar on Highway 6 just north of Hagersville. Great homespun atmosphere with a lunch counter as well as a dairy bar with sixty flavours of ice cream. Open 9:30 AM to 11:00 PM every day.

2. Reid's Dairy Store in Belleville. Operates as both a dairy bar and grocery store selling Reid's Dairy products together with bread, chips and whatever else can be offered at a good price. Reid's has a number of outlets in communities along the 401 north of Lake Ontario.

3. St. Clair Ice Cream, also known as Maple Leaf Dairy, operates an ice cream parlour at 2861 Danforth Avenue in Toronto. It's pretty spartan inside without any homespun atmosphere and seating capacity is limited.  Scoop sizes are enormous though and St. Clair does a thriving business in the summers. I particularly like the sherbets.
 

 

 
4. Shaw's Dairy Bar on Highway 4 just north of Port Stanley. A local institution and a must for beach goers for decades! Not quite as homespun as Hewitt's but the attraction at Shaw's is the ice cream.

Sadly, two of my other favourite dairy bars in the general area closed their doors for good in the past few weeks:
 
Steen's Dairy Bar and Grill in downtown Erin. A classic fourteen stool lunch counter that served Steen's ice cream including my favourite flavour, lime. It was a local institution dating back to the early part of the twentieth century and will be sorely missed.
 

 

 

 

 
The Stoney Creek Dairy operated an equally historic ice cream parlour at 135 King Street East in the Stoney Creek part of Hamilton. It was a very large operation that was mobbed in the summers leaving me wondering why it had to be closed.
 

 

 

 
 

Reid's shut down their satellite stores a couple of years ago or at least were supposed to.
I buy my soft serve from them, best I can find.
Scooped Ice Cream was a different story, I bought 100 tubs from them and sent half back, the other half I felt really guilty selling it to my customers.
My wife went out for dinner and left me a Blueberry pie, I just took it out of the oven, looks to hot to eat but I'm thinking I don't care, it's not going to last long. 

Among the six dairy bars I listed, Reid's was the least fun and my bottom choice all things considered.
 
 

Stoney Creek, the blond has a hat but you would still be eating her hair, the other one is worse, slack health inspector there I guess.

If you look at the Steen's picture you will only see one scooping cabinet, eight flavours that's it. Once you put in the necessities, Vanilla,Chocolate,Strawberry you only have 5 left. Not a very good selection.

Ice Cream Man


If you look at the Steen's picture you will only see one scooping cabinet, eight flavours that's it. Once you put in the necessities, Vanilla,Chocolate,Strawberry you only have 5 left. Not a very good selection. 

 
I remember Steen's having about fifteen flavours so there were probably cylinders/pails below the ones on top. The knock against Steen's was I take it their prices. I hear that milkshakes had reached $5.50 a glass, not exactly a friendly price point.

I wasn't knocking them only stating a fact. Their shakes were 4.50

My father used to take my sister and me to a place called Greenwood Dairies in Langhorne, PA when I was a kid. I think they had a diner type menu and I remember that their ice cream portions were absolutely huge.

Kerber's Dairy in Irwin, PA

Two in Lancaster County, Pa.
Oregon Dairy, on Route 272 NEof Lancaster.
 Very Good Ice Cream made from milk from their adjacent farm
 
Lapp Valley Farm. The Dairy bar is on the farm on Mentzer Road South of New Holland. Excellant Ice Cream in a beuatiful setting(they also have  stands at Kitchen Kettle  village in Intercourse and Green Dragon Flea market in Ephrata, both more accessable to tourists)

The Kawartha Dairy Company is another dairy that operates its own stores/ice cream bars in Ontario. These dairy stores are located at its head office in Bobcaygeon, as well as in Minden, Bancroft, Huntsville, Lindsay, Peterborough, Uxbridge and Barrie. I've never been to any of these but since Kawartha's ice cream is a cut above that of Breyers, Nestle, Reid's or St. Clair and the first five stores are located smack dab in lakeside cottage country, it would be tough for them to go too far wrong.
