Flyin' somewhere over the Holidays?
Word has it that Airport Food is actually getting to the point of being edible!
I know at Sky Harbor in Phoenix, there are a number of good local eateries that have opened places in the Airport.
The trend must be catchin' on all over.

If I was flying out of Chicago all I'd want is a hot dog.  A number of years ago I took a flight from Midway to Atlanta and was able to get a large Chicago dog at 6:30am...the breakfast of champions!

Grew up in Chicago and moved away years ago but I fly through Midway and always get an Italian Beef or a hot dog and if my layover is long enough, both. DFW has some pretty good places but I do not recommend Dickey's BBQ.

I travel a lot, and I'll do anything I can to avoid eating at an airport.  Even if there's something edible to be found (which from the looks of things, is rare), I never want a belly full of food on a flight.  

I enjoyed spending time at Vino Volo in the Detroit airport when we had a 7 hour layover waiting for a flight to London this summer.  I know it is a chain but they had reasonably priced wine flights and little appetizers that were really pretty good.  I remember the mini pork tacos as being the standout.

I noticed that Austin Bergstram made the list and I would like to add that were one to wander further up the terminal there is an Earl Campbell Sausage restaurant. Down the other end (By the Delta counter) is Harlan's BBQ not as good as Salt Lick but fair.

Actually Rick Bayless has a Frontera Grill in Chicago O'Hare Airport too-
Excellent food and Awesome Margaritas if you end up int eh United Terminal...

I agree! I enjoyed my very first Chicago style dog while waiting for my flight to Rome via O'hare from Dallas. One of the highlights of my trip.

I could have told you that. Dickey's (now a franchised chain) original restaurant is just a few blocks from my house and I wouldn't eat there on a bet!

We're really fortunate, they've opened one here in Georgetown. Evidently the word is out because I hardly see anyone in there.

Rick has 2 Frontera Tortas at O'Hare and I thought a 3rd in the works.

Food options have gotten a lot better over the years. 
 
Houston (IAH) is another airport that didn't make this list where I have found decent options, should the need arise. I believe the place is called Real Food, and it is much better than many other options at IAH.
 
I am a fan of Bojangles at CLT and have referred others for a Cajun filet biscuit, as needed.
 
While I have not been to the new Beecher's outpost at SEA, they do have an Ivar's for fish and chips.
 
DEN has a decent option in Timberline, and a solid late-night option (always helpful pre-red eye!) in Lefty's (in the international terminal). 
 
It's gotten to the point where you can find at least one better than average dining option in almost any large airport now. You never know when a connecting flight can be delayed and prompt an unplanned meal. At the end of the day, choosing one of these places IN the airport has got to be a better option that buying any of the overpriced, reconstituted crap they sell ON the plane. 

Surprisingly, there are upscale places to eat in the airports in Bristol, Glasgow and Heathrow goes without saying. Have a decent meal and still have enough time to load up on overpriced crap at the duty free.

Newark Airport, Newark, NJ. Go outside Terminal A to the bus/taxi lot. If you get there at the right time, there's a food truck that makes GREAT burgers at reasonable prices.

Here in Kansas City we are about to get a brand new terminal. Even though it was thoroughly renovated just before 9/11 it will be replaced within three years. We locals aren't happy about it but the Feds are on our case about security costs. Because of our layout, Kansas City needs more screeners then all three New York airports combined. So, after flirting with the idea of building the new terminal on the south side of the east-west runway, they have decided to tear down terminal A and build a new single terminal that will be able to handle all flights. Then they will tear down terminal B to make it easier to operate the new terminal. Terminal C will then be converted to offices.
 
They have done a lot of preliminary planning and they want to emphasize local foods just like airports. They intend to have a BBQ restaurant that will smoke on site, a steakhouse, and I heard that they want Stroud's out there. The city council is suppose to vote on the first design contract in January. The timetable calls for construction to start by 2014 and completed in 2016.

There was a Dickey's that opened up in the Atlanta burbs, close to my house. It didn't last but a few months. Serious bbq country here and they just couldn't hold a candle to the rest.

I connect all the time through MDW and ORD going cross-country.  At MDW I usually stop at Gold Coast, and depending on my mood will do either a Chicago Dog or a Hot Italian Beef.  At ORD, I stop at the hot dog place across from C27, usually there's the same woman working there, and she makes a seriously good dog.  (Scarily, yes, I've been through ORD enough times that I know which hot dog stands are better than the others....)
 
Random musing about MDW:  Kieran's Daughter (the pub) will give you your drinks in a to-go cup.  I always like waiting for my flight while sitting in one of Southwest's lounge chairs while sipping on my Guinness.

Don't know why my company saw fit to make me fly to Jacksonville the Sunday after Thanksgiving so I'm pretty sure the lines at the Salt Lick breakfast taco stand are going to be unreasonable but there you have it!

I remember when I was planning out my options to fly from Phoenix to San Antonio last April, Denver was a potential stop over if I had to change planes.  I was curious what the airport offered in terms of food and remember viewing Timberline's menu. Since  they offered wild game, buffalo burgers and Rocky Mountain Oysters they would be ok in my book.
 
On an aside
 
Although I rarely eat at Airports, I will do so if I'm on my way home  and a layover cuts into my meal time.  I've  also enjoyed the Q at Neeley's at the Nashville Airport, the loosemeats coneys at National Coney Island in the Detroit Airport, however most  Airports I've been to do have good local beer options on tap as well.

Food Fit For Flying!

Going thru Denver tomorrow, Thanksgiving AM, on Southwest. Only have an hour to connect. Anyone know a place close to the Southwest gates to grab a to go snack??
EDIT:
Did my homework. Looks like my best bets are Caribou Coffee and Woody Creek Bakery in Terminal "C".
Both on opposite ends of the Terminal so, which ever one's closest get the $$$.
BTW, checked out Timberline @ Airport on Yelp. They got BASHED pretty badly!
