Try dipping the Panatone in store bought eggnog mixed with your eggs.

I always buy several boxes of Cella's Cherries the morning after Christmas at Target... half price!  I search for the dark chocolate.

My father used to buy them for me when the were 2 for a nickle.  They are part of who I am.

Thanks, Foodbme for the links. However, Racine Kringles are mass produced in Chicago and are not good at all.

I'll hunt down the threads since Wisconsin sounds like the kind of place where really good kringles could be had!

Thank you! This year though I'll be getting my kringle from Hansen's Danish Pastry Shop on Pape Avenue just south of Cosburn Avenue here in Toronto:

Gracious...not only does Hansen's look like a real winner of a Roadfood Bakery in Toronto...I just found a new song to put on my Ipod while running.

Exquisite flavor and texture. No crumby crumble. A holiday tradition.

My first reaction was "oh, he MUST mean pignoli cookies!"  They certainly LOOK like pignoli cookies. What are cannoli cookies?

Pignoli cookies are made with almond paste in the dough. Fresh ricotta  gives these cookies the "cannoli" name. They are smooth & divine.

It's definitely a Roadfood kind of place with excellent strudel, cherry and lemon tarts! While not that far away by Toronto standards, it's outside my usual stomping grounds so I need to make a specific trip to patronize Hansen's.

It's so nice to see neighborhood bakeries in other neighbourhoods.

There's nothing like a great bakery. Other than the ridiculously excellent pies made by some friends originally from the South...all of our treats come from our wonderful bakeries.

It's also wonderful to see the displays in the front window!!!

I'm easy - just give me those peanut butter cookies with a Hershey's Kiss pressed into it and a glass of cold milk and I'm "good".

Mar52 - thanks for the tip on Target for Cella's after Christmas, couple boxes stashed in the refrigerator should do me just fine, in fact that's the way I like to eat them, cold from the frig.  I was surprised last Valentine's to see them at Family Dollar, individually wrapped in foil and selling for less than Christmas.

Mar52-Ann-Hepcat - I'm going back quite a few years, but there was a corner grocery with one of those old-fashioned cases full of penny candy and candy bars, Cella's had a 3-pack for about the price of a candy bar.  The neighborhood kids called them "cherry sips."

It's a nice one alright, but the ones I used to get from Klein's Bakery until five or so years ago put the pictured one to shame. Klein's butter cream frosting was actually intricate in application. Klein's Yule logs were so pretty that cutting into them was really a shame, and they were available in chocolate, vanilla or mocha.

Do you call it a Yule log or Bûche de Noël?

Bûche de Noël avec des champignons de meringue sounds so festive vs. the English.

I think Yule logs are German in origin so I wouldn't use French to refer to them. Meringue and particularly mushrooms wouldn't be right for Yule logs either because they're cakes with butter cream icing of some sort.

In the NYC market "yule log" is mostly associated with our great television tradition which used to start Christmas Eve in the evening through Christmas Day...

So we usually have Bûche de Noël in bakeries. Many times with meringue mushrooms as decorations.

My paternal grandmother used to make a moist, soft, rolled-up date cookie that was truly wonderful.

("Rolled-up" in the sense that she would spread the date stuffing over the cookie dough, roll it up, refrigerate, then slice for baking).

Anybody remember these, or better yet, have a recipe?

If Broadbent is in the competition, you'll have to invoke a non-competition clause somewhere in there . Not even sweet old Mr. Giorgio can go the distance  with the boys from Kentucky.
