I love Xmas tamales, a wondrous tradition that celebrates my son's heritage as well.

CCinNJ I'm sorry I just read your question. Peanut patties are much softer than brittle and they are pink instead of brown. I will have to look at recipes for exact differences as she makes both for holidays.

So far just one, but I average about two of the Vachon ones per Xmas season. I'm still mourning the closing six years ago of Klein's Bakery with their artistic and exquisite Yule logs and other cakes though.

My wife, like her mother and granny before her, bakes dozens of simple brown sugar/walnut icebox cookies which she then sends to her far-flung family as a delicious memory of Christmases past.  She made the mistake of taking them to work one year and now her coworkers start asking around Thanksgiving when she will be bringing them, lest they miss out.  Because the dough is made into loaves and frozen before being sliced and baked, they are perfect for "found time" during the busy holiday schedule.  Wouldn't be Christmas in our family without them.

I make reindeer balls every year which consist of cream cheese (softened), 1 pkg of oreo's crushed up and mix the two together and roll into balls, then put in the freezer for about 1 hr to harden up a little. Melt white almond bark in a pot being sure not to scorch it and drop the balls into the bark and pick back out quickly and place on parchment paper. They are a hit every where I take them!

                            Maurie's Mother's Cookies
                          Ingredients
                            1 C. butter (or 1/2 C. shortening and 1/2 C. butter)
                            1 C. brown sugar
                            1 C. white sugar
                            2 eggs
                            3 C. flour
                            1 tsp. baking soda
                            1 tsp. cream of tarter
                            3/4 tsp. salt
                            1 C. chopped walnuts

                          Directions

Cream butter with sugars and beat in the eggs. Sift together the flour, baking soda, cream of tater and salt. Add flour mixture to the creamed mixture and blend well. Fold in walnuts. Chill dough at least one hour, and then place on lightly floured board or wax paper.
Divide in half and form into 2 long rolls about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Wrap in wax paper and chill until firm. Slice thin and bake in a 325 degree oven for about 8 minutes (this is the temp/time for our oven, yours may vary).  Keep an eye on them, they will darken very quickly if left unwatched.
                          Makes about 10 dozen cookies.

I grew up in a heavily Norwegian neighborhood, so when you were talking about "reindeer balls", I was hoping that you were talking about reindeer meatballs, a food that was available in many local delicatessens. I was afraid you were talking about a delicacy that only male reindeer have...

After I had posted this I kinda was wondering if anyone was going to take it that way before they read what was in them! Are the real reindeer balls good? Are they something that they only have in the Norwegian areas? I'm a very adventurous eater and like to try new food, but always like to hear what others have to say about whatever it is that I'm wanting to try.
