Wow: Lexus' lawyers should check Kia's new logo! Wed, 12/5/12 7:46 AM (permalink)
As a loyal Lexus customer since 1994 I have been amused seeing Kia ripping off the "flavor" of Lexus design over the past six years or so.

Today, I was beside a car I swore was a new ES350; as it moved ahead of me I had to look twice at its insignia to realize that it was a Kia!

Lexus pretty blatantly copied European cars for years. Perhaps this is karma or maybe just someone copying a successful business? It sure worked for Lexus.

Agreed!  Lexus did "borrow" from the Euros.  But even then they often borrowed the wrong things; the shape of the SC430 was a rip off of the original Audi TT; both cars were butt-ugly!

Lexus new ES/LS designs:.  Finally, really decent-looking Lexi!

But I have always found that the best view of a Lexus was sitting behind the wheel.

Agreed. While some debate the originality of some of their designs, the execution on technology was and is pretty flawless.

You can have your Lexus, I'll stick to my 20K cheaper Avalon.

Nothing wrong with Toyota/Lexus; they passed GM as the world's #1 motor company years ago and have never looked back!

IMHO, the Lexus 460 motor (and its 400 and 430 predecessors) are the finest mass-production motors ever produced by the hand of man.

Then driving my T-Bird and Cadillac Eldorado, I remember laughing at the "rice burners" back in the '70's.  After a decade of volvos I "went rice" in 1994 and have never been happier with my vehicles and their servicing.

A slang term originally applied to Japanese imports but now applied to any car Asian in origin, even if it's built here in the US.

For example, a teenager who lowers his Civic 3 inches and gives it blue headlights, big stickers and a "fart can" muffler is often derisively referred to as a riceboy.

The newest Kias and Hyundais are incredibly good cars. As recently as the 09/10 models I felt they were a notch below other comparably sized and marketed cars, but the recent redesign was more than a skin freshening; it was a total revamp of manufacturing procedures as well. The newest offerings are solid, and quiet, and fuel efficient. Kias used to be a step below Hyundais, but they've now evolved into sporty (Kia) and staid (Hyundai); Kias handle better, Hyundais ride nicer.

They're absolutely one of the best values on the market right now. And with the 5/60 bumper to bumper and 10/100 powertrain warranty vs Honda/Toyota/Nissan/Mazda/Subaru all at 3/36 and 5/60, these brands deserve at least a test drive from any discriminating consumer considering those brands.

                          Can you name this vehicle?

That appears to be a Toyoda from the late 1930's.  Am I right?

Mr. Toyoda borrowed heavily from Henry Ford in both design and production methods.

As I recall, Ford brought his eye for detail and need for interchangeable parts from his original profession as a watch-maker; Toyoda from his "family business" of mass-producing fabrics on mechanized looms.

It's a Volvo.  I think it was Ford who borrowed from that design.

Wow!  That Volvo coupe really looks different from the 1980 and 1989 Bertone Coupes I owned and  -ed.  I put 160,000 on the 1979 and nearly 250,000 on the 1989.  My only objection was that their every exterior part was unique to the Bertones and was just as rare and expensive:  e.g., the headlight glass on the '89 was an "assembly" and cost $600!  To pass annual inspection I had to replace it twoce due to stone nicks.

Yes, I've heard that and intend to give them "a look" when my present lease is up.  As to Hyundai being "staid": have you seen their new Genesis Coupe?
