I recall a very early home brew beer judging, in Houston, Tx. It must have been around 1990. It was all serious, everyone trying to get it right. When we got to the malt liquor category, a suggestion was made that we put the samples in brown bags, and go outside and lean up against the dumpster, to test for authenticity. I don't remember who won the ribbon, but it was one of the most memorable beer judgings I ever attended.

The only one I see there that I actually participated in was the Boone's farm - back in high school living in a dry county with the nearest liquor store being 50 miles away any kind of beer or Boone's Farm was something special. Strawberry Hill.

I used to enjoy Boone's Farm Wild Mountain Grape which I don't think think they make anymore, this was 1970's. I liked it real real cold so I had a pewter mug and would fill it with ice. That was class!

I was working and had a decent job. Yet I wasn't 'exactly' of age. So, I remember having my older friends get me wine ... all my friends said "get me some Boone's Farm" ... so I sad "mee too" Remember, I had a job ... so I had more than $1.90 to spend ... SO, IMAGINE my outrage/surprise when, when I was finally of age myself, I found out there WERE OTHER OPTIONS ... :-)

It's bottom fermented like a lager, and has a BOAT load of fermentable sugars in it of course, that's why it's alcohol content is higher. It amazed me with the difference between starting gravity and finished gravity!

ChrisOC I remember drinking Boone's Farm Apple Wine, many, many years ago Yep, I'd have my brother get me a bottle for $1.04 with NY state tax, drink it, then sneak into the high school dance because I used the money to buy the wine!!

It does seem there were dozens of the "wino" brands around. I remember in the late 60's hanging around downtown LA where were there dozens of flophouses, and liquor stores and thousands of drunks literally passed out on the streets. Seems like every big city had an area like that.

Pink Catawba was my introduction to wine, circa 1969. Just thinking about it today gives me a headache. Then there was my brief infatuation (until the next morning) with MD 20/20 at the Kentucky Derby in 1971... Back in the mid 60's when I was a teenager, late at night I used to hear commercials for Jive 7 Wine on WNJR from Newark NJ. (Jive 7, with the taste from heaven!). A web search reveals nothing even remotely related. Man, would I love to hear that jingle again.

Not a bum or jive wine...Manischewitz & 7-up was often served at my house...growing up. My Grandparents could not pronounce Manischewitz on a bet so maybe it was a popular drink in Newark with the same dilemma.. It will always be known as a jelly jar to me..
