Whole Catfish!

What once was ubiquitous, at least in the South, is now becoming rare as hens' teeth.  There is a substantial difference between whole fried catfish and fried catfish fillets.  We are not talking about the latter, which seems to have replaced the whole fish in most restaurants.

We just spent several fruitless hours trying to find whole catfish while driving around northern Mississippi.  Finally, found Jack & Rips BBQ in Grenada, MS, where the whole catfish plate included barely one catfish.

Here in Atlanta, the only place we know of to get fried whole catfish (3 to the plate) is Folks Restaurant (a chain of 11 restaurants in the Atlanta area).  It's pretty tasty.

How about researching where one can still get fried whole catfish?

Come to Lloyd's in Birmingham, AL, Hwy 280.  I'll meet you there!  Delicious whole catfish!  Or filets if you like.

Try the Falls View in Jackson, GA. Very good stuff!

Henderson's in Covington is good as well, and if you go on Wednesday, you can also get all you can eat chittlins!!

Whole cornmeal fried catfish is very easy to find in Dallas. Although personally, I prefer the fried filets.

It's all the bones I object to. The filet's can be eaten easily without having to pick out the bones. The flavor is the same.

As a prime illustration of my point, Falls View Restaurant (a wonderful and delicious place) is now closed.  We were about to take friends down there, and just as a precaution, we called ahead.  Number disconnected!

Next time you get to a city with a large Asian population, check out some of the restaurants, often with the name "seafood" in the title. A lot of them have live tanks with catfish that will either steam or deep fry the whole catfish. It is simply phenomenal. The fried especially, often served with stir-fried peppers on top, is unbelievable. I wouldn't be surprised if atlanta has a few. Here are a couple I found:

I am sure you can find many more. Some Chinese places make it even look like the fish is swimming. let us know what you found!

Wow, closed for good, it sounds like. That's too bad, they had really good food!

Journey's End in Loganville has whole catfish on the buffet Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights and they are good. In addition to Henderson's, Neely's in Covington has whole catfish in addition to fillets.

In Houston, try Capt Benny's.  A chain with around six locations.  I used to go to Houston quite a bit on business and always went there when not entertaining clients. And sometimes when we were.

They serve a whole fish with the head removed.

Lots of places in Kentuciana serve the headless whole Catfish...and in many cases the fillets or Nuggets as well. Among them are the Moonlite BBQ (Friday Night Buffet with fried Oysters)...and most of the RYAN'S Buffet Places.

The best we've had was the AYCE at the Catfish Hotel at the Shiloh Nat'l Military Battlefield Site.  They also introduced us to that Tennessee  treat "CARMEL PIE)

Whole catfish was this past Friday's special at the Country Heights Supper Club in Hazel Green, WI, and to the best of my recollection it was the first time I'd seen it on a menu in ages if not ever.  Then again, Hazel Green is very close to the Mississippi River and it doesn't seem far-fetched that catfish would be more popular there than in other parts of the state.

Back in the late 1970's there was a big truckstop outside of Nashville that, for about $2.50 you got a whole catfish dinner that included a huge, whole catfish that took up one whole platter ... probably at least 2 lbs plus.  Really tasty with a cornmeal coating.
