Lovely report. Hope I can find more of your threads. Great reading. I live about 30 miles south of brisketboy and he is quite right. They don't seem to do much with fried chicken in this part of the state at least. Usual chains. In fact, I've never had really special fried chicken but I hope to some day. But I am all in favor of any kind of good food. Thanks for your efforts!

Thanks, mlm!  It's been fun and even a bit educational so far.

Mar, I would think that this month's chicken would be a bit happier since it has turkey to take some of the heat.

OK, I think I changed the privacy settings to anyone can view them (I think). If not,  Melly  Mel had an open sign in the parking lot and a closed only on Sundays and Holidays policy. Uh, uh. They were closed. Off to Bandung Indonesian where the sign on the door said open Friday for lunch 11 am to 2 pm. That door too was locked and it was 12:45. I spotted an sign for a Wah Kee Noodle Shop at 600 Willy (Williamson St). Blessedly it was open and in we went. All the noodles were  hand made, the prices were good and the one very overworked waitress was friendly and competent. They had a varied and most unusual menu. Pork shanks, radish cakes, etc.; not the same old, same old. We had a very satisfying and inexpensive meal and I look forward to returning. I'm so hungry for fried chicken. Next week for lunch we are going to Ashley's Que https://www.facebook.com/ashleysque124 and while I love their rib tips and hot links, I'm having their fried chicken with some greens and mac 'n cheese. Be aware that if you order chicken and waffles it will be breast strips which I don't much care for. I think this fried chicken rocks and I'd be curious SC, how it stacks up with some of your other finds. Ashley's has two locations, their original inner city carry-out only, and this one in the hip Walker's Point area. Melly Mel's will be on some future visit but at least I know where it is. Next door to a pawn store, I know it has to be great. btw, their pictures and Ashley's look very similar.

Good pick with Wah Kee! I would have suggested it and go there all the time. Next time in town you should check out Paul's PalMeni for dumplings as well as Melly Mels. She runs a rather "loose ship" and sometimes her hours change hourly. Always call ahead. Speaking of "Willy St" that is a new restaurant mecca...there are at least a dozen top notch dining places along there...Pub fare, Laotian, charcuterie, Tex/Mex, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, upscale bistro, Jamaican, to name a few.

Re:Chicken of the Month Thu, 12/26/13 12:01 PM (permalink)
December is typically a busy month and I was wondering when I'd be able to fit some chicken into the schedule, but last Saturday afforded me the opportunity.  I was in Crystal Lake, IL and discovered that if I returned home via IL-47 I'd go through Hebron (home of the basketball water tower) past Crandall's, a place I'd never heard of even though it's been in business since 1969.

The Chicken Zone is for the loading and unloading of passengers only.

The entryway walls are covered with various bits of advertising, news stories, etc. related to Crandall's and Hebron.  A closer look at the poster at the lower right reveals that tiny Hebron won the Illinois high school basketball title in 1952, hence the unique paint scheme for the water tower.

The dining room is very much in the supper club style, and as a bonus it was lightly festooned for the holidays.  The table on the other side of the fireplace must be highly desireable, as the only other lunch parties during my visit were seated there.

Crandall's chicken is broasted instead of traditionally fried, and it was very good.  The skin while not highly seasoned had a nice crunch and the chicken itself was very moist and flavorful.  Because I'd just eaten pizza a short time earlier I chose the $7.95 2-piece lunch special instead of the regular $12.95 AYCE option, which I would absolutely select if I was eating there on an empty stomach.

I skipped the coleslaw and the rolls because I wanted to concentrate on the entree, and picked mashed potatoes over fries.  The chicken gravy was very good and I could've made a meal out of the potatoes alone.

The one thing that surprised me was the speed at which my order was filled, but the chicken didn't seem like it had been sitting around.  Perhaps it's partially cooked ahead of time and then given a "finish fry"?  I don't know but I had no complaints, and would definitely eat here again if given the opportunity.  Perhaps a Friday fish fry is in my future.

Screaming Chicken:  I am not absolutely sure about the accuracy of this statement but I have been told that broasted chicken which is fried under pressure, I think, take far less time to fry???  My brother owned a restaurant in Friedley MN call T. R. McCoys and he had a broaster system which was fairly expensive and it seems to me that they fried chicken under 15 minutes???

I have been a fan of broasted chicken ever since.

Have eaten at Crandall's many years ago, and broaster is a company selling pressure fryer chicken franchise type coatings and equipment, only located about an hour from Crystal Lake in Beloit, Wisc.  The chicken adventure your on might take you to their place for some samples!  Thanks for the posts from my old stomping ground from many many years ago!

                                Brad, I almost missed December.

I know you were waiting for this...

It looks like his nuggets are frozen...

Rod, I grew up near Rockford and remember restaurants and grocery stores selling broasted chicken back in the '70s.  It's still quite popular in the area and after I moved away it seemed to get harder to find.

I was expecting the chicken to come out of the kitchen in 10-15 minutes but I'll bet it was no more than 5 or 6.

There's something special about BROASTED CHICKEN.

Thin, crisp, non-greasy crust.  Meat thoroughly cooked, yet incredibly juicy.

I love it with sour cream and seasoned pepper - the way it was served at the lamentedly late Whitey's in Arlington, VA.  Beer-battered OR's & slaw on the side, all washed down with Coors Light.  Heaven!

(It matters not how good your chicken is, ya' gotta' pay your 941 taxes!).

Broasted chicken is indeed a faster way to cook chicken. Very good!

Lisa: the Harold's Menu lists 3 pieces for the broasted chicken dinner, and one of the pieces is "rib"

Is this just the breast renamed, or is it a slightly different cut?

It's the breast, so basically you're getting 1/2 chicken, minus the wing.

...and it appears they specialize in wings so that's why you dont get the wing with the dinner :-)

they need all the wings for folks ordering just wings

When I was in HS the 'Quips won the state basketball championship.  Three of their starters went on to start for Duke, North Carolina, and Purdue.  Not bad for a little mill town!
