Question for the geeks among Us Tue, 02/19/13 1:14 PM (permalink)
I have a Ipad, receipt printer and a cash drawer.I have just bought with the Idea of setting up a POS system.I was/am thinking of using square or something like it because of the register feature.Being able to take cards is fine but not a HAVE to.
My question is do I need a router If I plan to stay offline? All I really want is a simple register where an employee can just look at a picture of the sandwich push, fries, push, drinks push.and tell the total and change. (I have part time help).Inventory info would be nice I.E product on hand, product sold.
So to some it up,If I go with a square type system what router would I need if I need one?
If I there is a offline system which one?
Can I just hook the Ipad to the receipt printer to the cash drawer and have a system?
I'm a windows guy and apple is totally new to me.

    daddywoofdawg,

I am a windows guy as well, in order to use Square you have to be online. I have square and an ipad, I still need to buy the compatible receipt printer and drawer. There is a thread here on this already, I remember replying to this question awhile ago but my search is wonky.

I have a mobile broadband card that I can use for my network connection so the iPAD will be online. If you do not want to provide credit card then just buy a plain old school register with the buttons that can be labeled. There are several POS options but most are too expensive or have a monthly fee. Square register is the best as far as cost.

Sprint is my provider and I pay $50mo for my broadband card which is a Sierra Wireless AirCard 802S, this is like a mobile router and lets you connect 5 devices all at once.

The wireless cards should be available from the provider.  Our local wireless company sells them and Verizon does as well.  Not sure about the others, but I'd be surprised if they did not.

So I disconnected the internet and tried register on the ipad, it appears to still work for cash transactions.  The reporting would not work so not sure if you can get daily sales but it did seem to work for cash.  I only tested a couple sales.

I went to the version store and best buy and neither had a router that had a ethernet port so I went online and bought this. Pepwave Surf Mini (SPW212).I'm told this is what I need so we'll see.I looked at cradlepoint and I didn't see a lot of good reviews for it.I.E hard to use, poor CS,etc. And it had more bells and whisltes than I needed.

You still could have purchased the wireless broadband card. You just need your ipad to be online. You could have gone from ipad USB/Fire Wire to the receipt printer and drawer and there are other setups.

Use the Star TSP143LAN or Star TSP650 printer. First connect your ipad to the mobile broadband card to obtain internet access. Then use a wireless Ethernet bridge to connect to the network, then plug your Ethernet devices (printer/drawer) into the bridge.

I have not set this up myself as of yet as I did not but the printer or drawer yet but this setup should work.
