Vernors Ginger Ale Thu, 05/16/13 4:40 PM (permalink)
Have they changed their recipe?  The last time I had one was maybe 20 years ago
and I remember it tasting gingery and spicy and having a wallop.  I picked up a
6-pack two days ago and it tastes like.....borderline cream soda.

I bought a bottle a few weeks ago for my yearly fix and it seemed to taste the same. It still had that wallop that no ginger ale has.

I'm guessing you've never had Blenheim ginger ale.

Nope. I used to get a good Jamaican ginger ale and ginger beer out here but I think they went out of business because I can't find it any more. I've nevver seen Blenheim, it probably isn't out here on the Left Coast.

GuS Extra Dry Ginger Ale is a very nice crisp dry soda. It doesn't pack a big ok' punchy punch but if you add a little grate of fine ginger...it'll make you cry.

GuS is based in NYC...but sold at BevMo & Whole Foods....out that way...

I'm looking at a can of seltzer water I'm drinking now and a big piece of fresh ginger on the counter. Hmmmm, wonder if I should try making my own......

I have a 12 pack of Vernor's in my frig right now. It available here in many markets in cans, 1/2 liter and 2 liter bottles.  Red Rock from GA and the already mentioned Blenheim's (hot) have excellent 'burning tastes' But Venors holds it's own in the flavor department.

Never heard that before. Must look and try.
Good stuff! I love Vernors. Agree about the Blenheim, although the "hot" is too hot for me. I just get low test. Here's a link to a great article on the history of Vernors.

Be sure to get the red cap as the yellow cap is a milder version.

Vernors is a Michigan based company, I think it is now part of the Schweppes family, but not sure.  we used to get it at Stater Brothers Markets in SoCal, and would see it now and then at VONS, so I know it has been available in that part of CA some years back

Before you do that, check BevMo, they often have Blenheim in the mixers section.  Until a shop I know in Boston starting stocking it, I'd bring home Blenheim from some of my business trips to LA.

I used to be able to find Vernor's all over the place, now I can only find it in one store in the area. $5 for a sixer, but it's worth it to me. I mix it with Jim Beam and lemon over ice, magnificent.

Try the Jim Beam HoneyBourbon with Vernors...or the JD Honey...both add a new 'favor' to the Ginger Ale

I enjoy Devil's Cut and Red Stag, so it stands to reason I'll probably like the honey also. I'm stopping by the liquor store on my way home from work, I will be sure to look for that. Thanks for the tip!

Well, I'll try another one now.  Strange I got cream soda yesterday.

And I'll keep my eye out for Blenheim!  One of our local Ace Hardware + stores
has been getting in regional root beers and ginger ales.

                                    Thanks!

edit:  I just looked at the Blenheim link and the Ace store did have some, I recognize the bottle, but
I didn't try it.  Next time!

btw, the reason I picked up some Vernor's is because my teenage son had some tummy issues and asked for ginger ale.  I was darn tired of that Canada Dry fizzy water they call ginger ale, so I got Vernor's.  I really doubted he'd drink it, leaving most of it for me.  That 6 pack was gone the next day, he didn't even save me one.  I got after him for drinking them all and he says "Five wouldn't have done it,  I would have died if I didn't drink six."  *rolls eyes*

I had to go back and get another 6 pack and threaten him with death if he didn't save me two.

I picked up 2 bottles of Blenheim with the gold cap today and they are in the fridge chilling.  I was ascared to get the red capped ones. :)

Well.  Stuff's got a bite.  My first two sips were "Ugh!  Way too sweet!!"
Is it real ginger in this?  I hope so, because my tummy is a bit unsettled.  I'm glad I picked this up today.

If you have the opportunity try one of the HOT ones. They are almost as 'burning' as the RED ROCK GINGER ALE from Georgia that tops my list for 'burn rffect'.

All this talk about Vernors & Blenheim got me craving a real ginger ale.  Since I've never found any Blenheim in New England (I usually pick up a case when traveling south), I picked up a four pack of Reed's Original Ginger Brew.

What a mistake.  I think I'd rather have a Moxie.  Any suggestions as what to do with the other three bottles?  Would disposing of them fall under disposal of toxic waste?

Capt'n Eli's out of Maine makes a nice ginger ale, as well as a variety of other sodas. Well worth picking up when the craving hits you.

If you find yourself in Somerville, MA, The Boston Shaker (69 Holland Street) stocks it, without too ridiculous a markup.

Well, the Blenheims did help my tummy.  But I like Vernors better.  Them Blenheim seemed too sweet and 'thin' at the top.  The ginger afterbite was nice though.

Two great drinks: Jameson Irish Whiskey and Vernors and of course The Boston Cooler. Vernors poured into a glass two thirds full and then top with good quality Vanilla Ice Cream. Make sure you add the ice cream last and do not pour the Vernors on top as it will really foam up.

Side note: Never breath in when drinking a freshly poured glass of Vernors as the gas emitted will cause you to cough.

I live in an area with a fairly large Hispanic population, so it's pretty easy to get decent ginger beer; or at least it used to. They've all gone to HFCS :(

Yes, it's way different. It hasn't been the same since they changed from sugar to fructose. Being from the Detroit area I've been drinking it for as long as I can remember. Mom made me drink it for upset stomach too. A Boston Cooler just ain't the same anymore!
