Why are Olive jars shaped the way they are?? Mon, 07/15/13 6:52 PM (permalink)
Well, after once again knocking over one of those tall thin jars of olives, spilling juice and olives all over the counter, I have to ask:

Why are Olive Jars shaped that way??? They don't stand on shelves very well, and they are a nusance to get olives out of.  Who are the bone-heads in the olive industry who think this is a good way to deliver thier product??

What's wrong with packaging them in a short wide salsa-type jar? I'm sure we are all smart enough to realize that there's olives in there, not salsa, if we saw it on a store shelf.

I'm thinking it's some marketing and sales genius who thinks "they look beautiful this way".  A string of black or green pearls up the jar.  Tip.  Crash.  Splash.

Once upon a time, I found one brand of pretty decent quality olives that had them all mounted on a plastic thing in the jar. All you had to do is pull it up and pluck however many olives you wanted from its little plastic spikes. Alas...I no longer remember what brand or where I found them.

Some of the store brands do come in short squat jars, but the quality is not so good.

Hmmm...to take up less space on or behind the bar, perhaps?  Pickled mushrooms, pickled onions, and maraschino cherries all come in similar jars.

I always thought it was so wives can brain recalcitrant husbands more easily, as the  need arises.

My wife would never use something as tiny and near weightless as an olive jar. Not when she can lay her hands on her ten-inch cast iron skillet so easily.

I buy my Kalamata olives and NiÏ‚oise olives in bulk so he doesn't have to worry about any jars.  The cast iron skillet....that's another idea.

There had to be a reason every woman in my family for generations always kept a cast iron skillet handy on a back burner of the stove.

The shape sells more of your brand of olives when displayed on the top row of grocery shelves.  Since they are almost always on the top shelf, bottle height isn't a factor and thinner jars allow more product to be displayed.

I've sent this question to my son who has a rep company that reps a CA olive grower who packs olives and crushes great olive oil.
Hope to get the true skinny.

I just buy them in bulk, so the containers I get are usually pretty "tip-proof."
