4th Annual Westerly/Misquamicut Beach Trip Fri, 08/23/13 9:23 AM (permalink)
Hey everybody, doing the vacation planning again,  we are planning to go back to Misquamicut beach area. Now it's myself and my wife our three boys 5 and 3.5 and 2 AND our daughter 4 months (Turns out 4 kids is CRAZY!) I am looking all around the area for some new stops. We have had some great meals from all your recommendations Crazy Burger, W.B. Cody's, Cousins Dawg house (closed), Senor Flacos- (still bummed it closed, was GREAT for kids),  Van Ghent Cafe,  two fishes, and a couple others. The newest place to the list last year was Markos, was great but just saw it moved from Westerly back to Narragansett.  We want to try Kit Kat's, from searches it has some good stuff. We bumped up to a house from the sand castle with all these rugrats, staying right on Atlantic Ave again.

Any new places to stop by and try? You guys have never let me down! Still haven't gotten a pizza in Westerly, suggestions? And just to throw another monkey wrench any really good gluten free stops? My better half is trying to cut gluten out for a bit as a trial thing.

Thanks again everybody

I just spoke with my coworker who lives in Westerly.
He recommends Casa Della Luce for pizza-
i've tried their Sopresatta when he brought it in- it's very spicy- try it on their "soupy pizza"
Apparently their chowder is very good too- they even use miniature clam fritters in lieu of oyster crackers.
One town away- in Stonington CT there's a wonderful Mexican Restaurant
Milagro Cafe- probably one of my favorite new "local" restaurants of 2013

Not to tout the casinos at all, but it's not far from where you are, and there is a newer offering at Mohegan - the Hash House A Go-Go. I think it started in Vegas, but I had the chicken and waffles there and they were really great. HUGE portions (e.g. 4 waffles and 2 full chicken breasts) so good for sharing or for leftovers. Fun menu.  Also at Mohegan is Pepe's Pizza.

Thanks guys, that soupy pizza looks awesome. Any thoughts on the pizza place or  Vittorias NY Pizza, both seem to have pretty good reviews.  We definitely hit up the Mexican place, it's always a big hot with everyone. Any other places that serve up good tacos and nachos even on the go?

that is kinda weird that the picture of the pizza has a description like "best soup ever" attached to it :-)

I checked with my coworker- he would go with The Pizza Place over Vittoria's- he recommends the "chop pasta salad" at The Pizza Place

              Hi Jack
For pizza, Vittorio's and Pete's Famous are both very good.  Both are Italian style, as opposed to the Greek style usually found here.  I've never had pizza at Pizza Plus, but people seem to love it.
The people who run Vittorio's have two other restaurants, one in Westerly and one in Ledyard, CT; the one in Ledyard offers gluten-free  pizza, but I don't think either of the Westerly ones do.  Call and see.  Vesta Bakery on Railroad Avenue makes very good gluten-free cakes (order ahead) and occasionally has something GF available in the case too.  Call to check availability and hours.
I've been to Kit Kat's twice and haven't been overly impressed.  You may have better luck.  If you have a hankering for BBQ as a break from seafood, head down Route 1 to Chester's in Groton.
Speaking of seafood, in case you missed it last time Three Little Fish has moved to Misquamicut, right across from the State beach.
If you head down to Watch Hill, St Clair Annex would be a fun place for the kids.  Breakfast and lunch, burgers and stuff, with a popcorn machine outside and an ice cream window.  A bit pricey, but good quality.  Just a few steps from the carousel and the beach.  Mel's in Pawcatuck, just over the bridge, is also good for ice cream.
Finally, on your way to the beach, make a stop at Ritacco's Market or Dunn's Corners Market for great grinders.  Also in the Dunn's Corners area, Manfredi's Farm Stand, in addition to produce,  has a sort of petting zoo with goats, sheep, a couple donkeys, etc.  and vending machines with food for the critters.  Kids seem to love it.

Enjoy your vacation, and keep an eye out for Taylor Swift.  She recently bought a house in Watch Hill and has been spotted around town occasionally.
