America's 20 Best Steakhouses Fri, 08/23/13 5:26 PM (permalink)
Yeah, it's a slideshow. Just hit the pause and go through at your leisure using the arrows. I was impressed by the list, they even had RF approved joints Lugar's, Cattleman's and Indy's best, St. Elmo's. There are certainly a few on that list I'd love to hit up, including Batalli's place in Vegas. Mmmm....steak.

It is what it says "20 Best Steakhouses," not "20 Best Steaks" at steakhouses.   I liked Cattleman's and St. Elmo's, but there are way more that 20 steakhouses that serve better (and more expensive) steaks.

I've eaten at 2 of the listed restaurants.

          One was fantastic.

The other was very disappointing and swore me off eating at "steakhouses" in the future. I typically get better steaks at non-steakhouse restaurants.

I've eaten at 7 of them...they were all good....each of them offering a different twist on a great meat.

                      Any Smiley = Been there

= Was good but not great

                      = Really good pushing great

The more the smiley the better the experience and steak

But the owner can't drive (he ran into the back of my car years ago when I lived south of S.F.).

I would have taken one of those Prime Rib carts for that...and drove it around San Francisco in-style!!!!

I have been to eight of the listed restaurants, and the only one that I would describe as a clunker was one that others adore - St. Elmo's in Indianapolis. I had such an unpleasurable experience that it isn't even on my radar when I go to town - and I am there at least once a year.

Disappointed with the Milwaukee choice. Mr. B's is not that good. Very expensive and small portions...there are certainly much better steak houses in the city.

The only one I've been to is Keen's, but I've been there about a dozen times. Does that count as 12 out of 20?

5 OClock  Steak House on 27th and State street in Milwaukee-not a great neighbor hood, but a fantastic place. One pound or more steaks, unlimited salad with home mage dressings, a relish tray, and wonderful breadsticks served with honey and butter. Potatoes are separately priced-I urge an order of their steak fries.Best, ever.

When you think beef, you think Texas.

When you think Texas, you think ("what recession?") Dallas.

So, one would think that opening a high-end steakhouse here would be a 'no brainer'.

"Down here" you can trip over a great steak crossing the street.

We do not need a sommelier to suggest a Bourbon.

I wish this had come out before I went to San Francisco a few months ago. House of Prime Rib would have been worth trying.

I'm just surprised they didn't have Jocko's in Nipomo on the list---they are usually up there. Mmmmm, Jocko's Spencer Steak cooked over red oak......

Having eaten at the famed Jess and Jim's steakhouse, I can tell you that it's food is not worth the fame.  The steaks there are highly over-rated.  They are still living off of their reputation from a Playboy restaurant review back in the early 70's.  The only steakhouse I have found in Kansas City that is independent and worth some praise is The Plaza III.

This a good list...but all across the US there are the hidden gems that will never make the list because of politics and the people who are chasing the winners have never been to the out in the woods places.

MyTerry speaks with wisdom in his words... There have to be places like Doe's and the Tea Steak House in S.D., or Archie's Waeside in Iowa....
Look at the list of Steak places in our REVIEW section, plenty of 'under the radar' locations that sound great to me.
