Insurance for a food truck/trailer? (WA state) Fri, 09/13/13 10:35 PM (permalink)
Hey everyone! I'm new to the forum and I have a quick question.
I am in Washington State if that makes a difference.
How does insurance work for food trucks and food trailers? I assume you need both collision insurance for the vehicle itself, as well as liability insurance to protect you from lawsuits.
How much do you food truck owners pay for insurance each month? Are you fully covered or just the basics?
Note - I'm still very early on in the planning process. I'm just trying to get a good idea of my expenses, and insurance will likely be a big one.
Any help is appreciated!

I am in WA building a food bus, my liability is ~ 85 a month. I have a CDL, and it is a CDL vehicle at this time, so that has some impact I assume. I am hoping to get the gvwr reduced when the build is complete (If I can keep the gross weight under 26k) That will remove the CDL requirement. There are several threads covering the liability aspect. google "roadfood insurance".
    What part of WA?

liability insurance for your vehicle has nothing to do with the business liability insurance you'll need.I carry 1 mil most events want that as a minimum and I like living indoors.
            look up vendors insurance.

I had a quote from progressive just for the trailer and truck and it was $2,400.
Then I found this company on Linkedin
and it was only $1,300 a year and that included 2 million in general liability and the trailer covered for $35k and zero deductible
commercial liability with 1 million each occurrence and 1 million personal injury and 100k for property damage I cause

Shop around, you can still do better. You don't need 2,000,000 GL, 1m is all that 99.9% of events will ask for. You can get that for $300 yr, so you are now paying $1000 for physical damage and
You still need commercial liability for your tow rig.
Shop, shop, shop. Try here for GL, I was going to switch to them, had my broker check them out, basically same coverage I had minus a bit of fluff. My broker was magically able to match their price.

Insurance for every vehicle is very necessary thing... Insurance should be taken to the drivers as well as the truck driver who is driving...

food truck, the kitchen and vehicle is combined to create a single vehicle exposure. However, a food trailer has the mobile kitchen exposure (trailer + kitchen) and a vehicle that is needed to tow the trailer to venues. Usually that tow vehicle is a truck they personally own or a vehicle they plan to  purchase. This is where most people think they can just get General Liability and Mobile Property coverage for the trailer and be done. Perhaps they are under the impression that the trailer is covered automatically under their personal auto insurance policy.
