Broasted Chicken And Pie Tue, 10/22/13 7:43 PM (permalink)
A drive to southeast Ohio for a bit of leaf-peeping and a visit to Old Man's Cave in the Hocking Hills was on the agenda today, and just before turning off the highway to enter the area we wanted to see lleechef suggested that we grab a little lunch. It had been several years since last I'd visited Bush's Family Restaurant in the city of Logan and lleechef had never been there so that's where I headed.

It was after one o'clock when we arrived at Bush's, and there were just a couple of cars in the parking lot so the place was very uncrowded, which would not have been the case had we arrived half an hour earlier.

The specials today included grilled chicken livers, country fried steak, all-you-can eat roast beef and stuffing, and chicken and noodles. We decided to skip the specials, and lleechef ordered the Broasted chicken and some cole slaw. I try not to pass up a chance to get liver and onions, and that's what I ordered. With the liver -- beef liver -- you had a choice of fried or baked and I picked baked, with mashed potatoes, gravy, and green beans with bacon.

My meal was just fine. There was nothing great about it. It was just down home good, and filling. The Broasted chicken, on the other hand, was spectacular, according to lleechef. She proclaimed it the very best she'd ever tasted, and that included the Broasted chicken she'd had at Bob's in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. /http://www.roadfood.com/Restaurant/Overview/671/bobs

Now here's where buffetbuster is going to hurt. The list of house-baked pies was amazing. They had blueberry, raisin, strawberry rhubarb, butterscotch, blackberry, banana cream, and many more. lleechef ordered the blackberry pie and I chose the banana cream. She loved hers, I loved mine, and the thing is, both were every bit as delicious as the pies at the vaunted Henry's of West Jefferson, Ohio. http://www.roadfood.com/Restaurant/Overview/544/henrys

Following lunch we headed for Old Man's Cave State Park (on Ohio 664) where lleechef wanted to see the cave, itself. The cave got its name from a recluse named Richard Rowe who lived there in the 1800s. It's really just a huge recess in the sandstone rock of the half mile gorge. I'd not been there in more than 15 years so it was fun to sort of see it through lleechef's eyes. Three of the park's main areas are Old Man's Cave, Cedar Falls and Ash Cave, and they are all along the six mile long Grandma Gatewood Trail, which is part of Ohio's Buckeye Trail, as well as part of two national systems - the North Country Scenic Trail and America's Discovery Trail.

All in all, it was a very enjoyable fall day, and the food was terrific. By the way, anyone planning to hunt deer in the area during Ohio's gun season, which opens the Monday after Thanksgiving, ought to consider breakfast at Bush's. They open for hunters at 4 a.m. during the season.

What a lovely day you described, and it was good to have a nice meal to make it even more enjoyable. I wonder how long it will take Buffetbuster to find a reason to take a trip there to check out the pies?

Not long, I'm sure. lleechef let him know about the chicken and the pies.

Whoops! It seems she agreed to keep it quiet. I just may be in trouble.

Back when we first started Roadhouse Bar-B-Que Sauce, we were fortunate enough to pick up The Broaster Company as a customer.  They sold our sauces to many of their franchisees and ordered frequently.

They were a good customer, so I'd hop in the car occasionally and drive up to Beloit for a face to face.  On more than one occasion, I was invited into their test kitchen to sample, and offer my opinion of, their latest products.

The most memorable was a Broasted fish filet they were developing.  it was the flakiest, moistest, most flavorful piece of fish I've ever tasted.  And it was cooked from frozen, mind you.

Unfortunately our sauce wasn't quite the screaming success we'd hoped for with the franchisees, and after a few years we parted ways.  Still, I appreciated their early support of a fledgling business, and voice my approval of their products to this day.

Glad you had a good experience with their chicken.

Their fish may have been a flop.......get it? fish, flop? never mind........but the chicken I had today was truly the best I've ever had.  I felt like Guy Fieri as I was eating, "look at the crunch, see how moist and juicy the meat it, there's just enough seasoning" etc.  It was a great lunch topped off with a beautiful piece of blackberry pie.  Plus Old Man's Cave and all the beautiful foliage........it was the quintessential autumn day!

Trying to bait me with bad jokes, eh?  I'll let you off the hook this time, but don't let me catch you at it again.  Pretty good, right?

I don't know that the fish was a flop, it might just be available in limited areas.

Any place that serves good fried or broasted chicken is OK by me!  Pie, however, is completely irrelevant.

For years I thought all broasted chicken was the same.  I think it was here at RF that I learned that it's the concept and process that're consistent but the actual coating formula is up to the franchisee.

I would have loved this meal, but I probably would have ordered both the grilled chicken livers and the broasted chicken.

And still made room for pie!

Actually, it was pretty good. Think of baked steak -- the sort you'll find in diners back home. It's done in the oven in a gravy or sauce.

Michael, I would have never thought of ordering liver baked. The way I like liver is, thin sliced, dredged in a seasoned flour, fried in bacon grease. Then pilled high with sauteed onions, bacon on jewish rye.............Thats the Bridgeport way of doing it, my boy.........I figured you got the Baked Liver idea from Tom. It sounds like one of his crazy ideas..................have a good day my friend.............Bill

I'd never heard of baked liver, but it sounded interesting. It was thin sliced instead of being fried it was cooked in the oven with onions and sauce. As to liver on rye with bacon, well, I can understand it being a Bridgeport thing. Up the road in New Haven it would never fly. In fact, that sounds more like it might be a Tom thing than what I had.

You are right, this is going to hurt.  Mariton and I visited Ash Cave just a few months ago on our way to Lexington for the weekend and we didn't know about this place.  Michael, considering you are not much of a dessert eater, if you say the banana cream pie was that good, then it gets my attention.  As did the pie photos that lleechef texted me.  So glad that the two of you enjoyed a nice day trip together and thanks for the report.

Here's Bush's Family Restaurant on the web.

Broasted Chicken and cherry pie; now, that's LUNCH!

                                              Locate Broaster Chicken near you!

For some reason SE OH, SW PA, and northern WV are hotbeds for this delightful treat.

I just love the stuff; it's especially wonderful with sour cream, beer-batter onion rings, and cold Coors Light!

And, of course, cherry pie for dessert.

If I'd known you were going to be hungry when you were visiting Ash Cave I'd have told you about Bush's. I told Davyyd about it a while ago (last year, I think) and he stopped there. As I recall, he got them to make him one of his beloved BPT sandwiches. I didn't mention that when we were there yesterday for fear of being tossed out.

Just gives me a reason to go back Michael.  Did a little bit of research before that trip and found plenty of real interesting sounding restaurants, especially around the Portsmouth area.  This will have to be a future trip.

Nice shot. I forgot that it was summer when you were there. Old Man's Cave doesn't have as much open space, and there's a drop-off to the water below.
