I have a good buddy making a road trip to Memphis, and I look to my trusty RF insiders to give me the skinny. His group has already decided on Bari for a "fancy" meal. I hear good things about Payne's for bbq. Is Rendezvous too touristy? Any and all responses appreciated.

Based on the recent trip we took for Memphis for the bus tour, Alcenia's, Gus's Fried Chicken, Payne's and Cozy Corner get the high marks.  Rendezvous is more about the experience than the food, which is average to slightly above average.  But it is fun.  Tell him to go and make up his own mind.

My experience is that the downtown Gus's has much longer waits than the one farther out, near Gibson's Donuts.  Also, sometimes you have to pay to park at that one, and depending on what's going on downtown, that could get really steep.
I haven't been to Payne's, Cozy Corner, or Rendezvous yet, but I have been to Leonard's and it's completely wonderful, one of my ten favorite BBQ joints.

If 86 is the code for Memphis, Mr Stern, what is the number for Nashville?
I tried numbers close to 86 but they took me all over the map

86 is the code for Game Over. As in, "That guy's had too much to drink. He's 86."  Or, "The chocolate pie is 86."

You find these by searching in the Find Regional Eats in the upper right hand corner of the home page.
