Jewish Delis in Cincinnnati Sat, 10/26/13 11:45 PM (permalink)
I was born in Cincinnati but haven't been there since I was three years old in 1969. I was talking to my parents and mentioned that I was tentatively planning to go the proposed Cincinnati Chili tour in the spring. My dad mentioned that I ought to go to one of the Jewish deli's if they were still open. I haven't heard anyone mentioned Jewish Deli's in Cincinnati. Are they still in business and are they any good?

This article - http://www.cincinnatimaga.../04/01/rascals-ny-deli - names a number of Jewish delis in Cincinnati that are no longer around, and I'd guess your dad is familiar with some of these

Pilder’s, Bilkers, Irv’s, Upper Krust, Stanley’s, and Temple

Temple was on the west side of downtown, fairly near the Convention center, and lasted the longest.  I recall eating there in 2006 or so.

I really dont think anything like those places still exist in Cincinnati

    Some replacements

    1) Izzy's   http://www.urbanspoon.com...ntown/Izzys-Cincinnati
Their corned beef is well beloved by many, although I have to say I dont really care for it myself.  I do dearly love their potato pancakes.   Many locations around Cincinnati.

    2) Rascals   http://www.urbanspoon.com...als-NY-Deli-Cincinnati
A relative newcomer located in the Blue Ash area.  Far more extensive selection and menu than Izzy's.  Prices are very high and the ownership is very smug and at times rude.  Unlike Izzy's they have a deli counter, which includes a number of items I have come to associate with a jewish deli (my apologies, I am not Jewish myself) like sturgeon, gelfite fish, matzo, knish, rugelach, etc etc.  I have eaten at Rascals and like the food, but not the service or prices.

    3) Marx Hot Bagels  http://www.urbanspoon.com...-Hot-Bagels-Cincinnati
There used to be a ton of locations, but now they are down to just one. I have not been there.  I mention it because it has some aspects of a kosher deli, and it might meet your need(s) at a lower price point than Rascal's

Honorable Mention: Jungle Jims (two locations - Eastgate and Fairfield) are in essence huge grocery stores that really pride themselves on a wide selection of ethic-specific foods.  I have not searched the place out specifically for jewish foods, but I'd be willing to bet big money (if I had it) that they have an entire aisle full of the stuff, as well as a section in the freezer aisles for it as well

Had a Jewish friend move up here about eight years ago and recommended him to Izzy's and he said it was just OK.

Like TJ said, the potato pancakes are really good, but Izzy's is still a chain.

Is New York, NY in Mount Washington Jewish? I enjoy their sandwiches on occasion, but I've never given that a thought. Whether they are or not, the make good sandwiches.

No idea - I went into the one downtown (which i believe has long been out of business) a few times and was sorely disappointed, so I never ended up trying the one in Mt Washington, even though I lived less than a mile away

Do they have a deli counter with take home stuff or just a restaurant menu?

Just a restaurant menu. The more I think about it they probably aren't Jewish.

Funny how Cincinnati has a high Jewish population and none of us can think of any delis other than Izzy's.

I like Izzy's, tasty food, decent prices, several locations and friendly ppl.

If you like or want to try Cincy style chili I highly recommend Camp Washington.

Grew up in Cincy, but can't recall if any of the Jewish delis are still around.  As far as chili, Skyline is the way to go.  Locations all over Cincy, but the closest to me was (and still is) in Oakley, near the Hyde Park area.  Grab a few cheese coneys and either a 3-, 4-, or 5-way for the real-deal experience.

I found out that it was the original Izzy's that my dad frequented from 1964-1969. He talked about how small it was both in the dining area and behind the counter. He said that listening to Izzy and his wife argue and push each other around behind the counter was a good show. Looking forward to visiting one next week.

They're pretty good, but I'd temper your expectations. A Jewish friend of mine moved here a while back and was underwhelmed, and I've had better elsewhere. Not saying you won't enjoy it, it's just not the greatest food on the planet.

Cincinnati has a high Jewish population but for whatever reason there are very few Jewish delis.

Went on Urbanspoon and found Delis (Over 100) & Bagel Shops (77) but hard to determine if they were Jewish Delis.
                      Did find this one:

I have noted the address for Marx's as it says Blue Ash and that's where we're staying.  It surprising to see a bagel place open at 9am?  Typically, as when I lived in NY, they were open by 4am...and often the door was unlocked well before that.
We'll try to stop there but with that relaxed schedule, we'll already be on our 3rd or 4th stop....

That being said, after making my first trip to NYC in October, I have to say as a native Cincinnatian that Marx is about as close as you're going to get here.

Another nice deli with many Jewish specialties as well as other Eastern European foods is Marina's International Deli in Montgomery  (just up from Dewey's Pizza going North away from I 275) - they are the only deli in our area selling smoked beef tongue...they have a heck of an assortment of exotic cold cuts and salads etc...

Marx is Kosher all the way and is run by a Catholic ...it is a truly amazing place...
The above link lists the hours as open during the Sabbath.

                                        Monday - Friday

                                        9:00am-9:00pm

                                        Saturday - Sunday

                                        9:00am-8:00pm

I read it's Certified Kosher by the Vaad of Cincinnati - I'm sure the way they get around the hours is by having someone not "Shomer Shabbos" working there then, though it doesn't really feel right to me for them to be open during Shabbos. I also read that the Catholic owner found out his grandfather was a Jewish tailor (mine was, too!)

Those of you who live in cities with good Jewish delis are so fortunate. Living in Jackson, Mississippi, we are deprived that good fortune. What I would give for really good pastrami, knishes, and blintzes. Some good challah french toast would be nice, as well.

I'll grab a chili cheese bagel with you.......

                                            You're on!!!
