Athens GA Sat, 02/1/14 4:18 PM (permalink)
Anybody have ant recommendations for BBQ in Athens. I'm coming down with my brothers for the Masters and we stay south of Athens on the highway (fly into Atlanta around 11AM).
We will drive up to Athens to hopefully catch a game (last time baseball and spring football) and hopefully eat in a better BBQ place. Thanks for your help

I am sure he will see this and maybe post but Heartbreaksoup has done a heck of a job of visiting and documenting that area. Better do a little studying ahead of time because in some of these areas BBQ is geared toward the weekend.

I can't hear of Athens without thinking of it as the home of Ort Carlton. His old posts are worth looking up.

Fresh Air is very good bbq. Don't pass up their stew!

I ate at Pulaski Heights BBQ just a couple of weeks ago with a friend. I really enjoyed it.

I had the pulled pork sandwich special with smoked potato salad and vinegar-lime slaw. Both the sandwich and the tater salad were delicious. The vinegar-lime was good, but I decided I prefer creamier coleslaws.

I'll be in Athens on Friday, actually, and hope to visit Chubb's, a new place north of the city in the town of Ila.   Pulaski Heights is definitely worth a second look from me, but not this time out.  Should Ort. see this thread, he'll probably wax eloquently about Harry's Pig Shop, which is indeed very good, and one of the very few places I've visited that serves both Brunswick stew and hash over rice.

Sadly, Bill's in Hull closed recently.  Their chicken mull was amazing.

But yes, whichever you pick - and the map that Chickenplucker provided has links to my stories, and there are Urbanspoon badges on each of them - triple-check the hours before you plan.  Some great places, like Paul's in Lexington, have very oddball hours.  If you only have a Tuesday or Wednesday free, your options will be very limited.

If it was me, on a Saturday, then Paul's would be my first choice, followed by Zeb's, and Hot Thomas.  I'd also consider Harry's, Fresh Air, Bar-B-Q Shack, and Scott & BJ's as very reasonable options.  And if, by highway, you mean I-20, then Crowe's in Madison and Holcomb's in Greensboro are close by.

              Dearfolk,
Ort. here, coming out of lurk mode for a moment.
Harry's is quite good, but serves hash and not Brunswick stew, and "over rice" is only an option if there is some to top.
The pork is easily enjoyed without sauce. Half chickens are often available.
My favorites of their sides are the potato salad and squash casserole. The beets aren't bad, but Harold likes them even more than I do because his mother made him eat them. (If anyone gets that, I'll eat my doorstop!)
Wholeheartedly, Ort. Carlton in Drizzlydreary Athens, Georgia.
              P. S. I'm ort30601@hotmail.com -- let me know what you think.
              P. P. S. Thanks for alerting me, Paul!! Glad to help!

I could've sworn they served both stew and hash.  Mea culpa.  Somebody does both, anyway.  Ah, well.  It's still not in my own top three!

Thanks all, the trip is pretty much set. Little more homework and we're ready but I do have 2 months. Here are some picks from 2011. https://picasaweb.google.com/103200304792624046939/2008_05_03#

I would pass on Zeb's. Lives on its past. In Athens the Bar B Que Shack on Lexington Hwy is open Thur Fri Sat and has nice q, chicken, stew and homemade banana pudding that is cooked with meringue. The Butt Hutt is ok in Athens. If you head to Zebs, keep going to Royston and eat at Bar H. In White Plains there is Holcomb's.
In Thomson there is Sweet T's for home cooking. Sconyers BBQ in Augusta serves plenty. I like the meat but not the sauce.

Not wanting to steer you away from Barbecue.....but giving
you a spot for lunch on the way. Try the Blue Willow Inn
in Social Circle on the way.

The beets line sounds like Red Green to me (as I enjoy a can of Aviator Hogwild IPA).
