Hopkins House in Pensacola, closed since February 2004, has been purchased. The new owner is planning for a December re-opening.

Here's a link to a Pensacola News-Journal article:

Looks like changes are planned. I hope it retains some of what made it so special.

Previous owner Ed Hopkins, son of founder Arkie Hopkins, died unexpectedly in September, just after showing the house to the new owners, and just before Hurricane Ivan ravaged the Pensacola area.

What outdated menu?? Since when was fried chicken, baskets of fried chicken livers, black-eyed peas, collard greens, corn bread and other yummy things served family-style outdated? Oh right, eggs cooked any style and fresh muffins.....oh I forgot, this is a person that opened an OXYGEN BAR!!! Do you suppose we could get eggs over easy with foie gras and a hit of oxygen?? Granny would be appalled!

Omigod! I had the luck and good fortune to eat there last May (2003). I love old boarding houses and Hopkins lived up to its Roadfood rep. Waiting on the porch, hustle and bustle, boarding house reach, so much food you had to stack it (the fare comes out in metal pans much like cake pans so they can be stacked),meeting new people, bussing your own table, and feeling so comfortable cause you are surrounded by a sense of history. Oh, crap! Pardon my smut but I am skeptical. You know, finding out about Roadfood started at Hopkins for me. Believe it or not we shared a small table with two people who said they were "Roadfooders", did I know what that was, and told me and my husband about this website and the Stern's book. Bravo!!! to those oxygenated, Calif, yuppie, make this my umpteenth restaurant attempt Pensacola wannabees IF they can do what they plan. But I've got a feeling Arkie's ghost is gonna be mighty
      perturbed!

Sorry, whew ! Just a little upset.

Well, the latest on Hopkins is that the deal fell through.
        So Hopkins House remains dark...

I second lleechef -- their menu wasn't outdated at all. It was one of the highlights of a trip to Florida we took a few years ago. Wonder what the problem was -- the place was packed when I was there.
