BBQ in Fayetteville

Anybody have a recomendation for BBQ in the fayetteville area?

Are you asking about Fayetteville, NC? I do not know of any good barbeque right in Fayetteville, but about 40 miles north on 1-95, exit 107 (Kenley) and less than a minute drive is Moore's Barbeque with wonderful pulled pork sandwiches. They also serve Brunswick stew and fried chicken. All we ever have had there is the great pork but the fried chicken looked awesome.

I just spent a couple of days in this area and frankly, there's BBQ everywhere in this area. Possibly Alabama has more bbq joints pewr capita, but there are q joints everywhere you go in this area. I'll report later on one that I visited but there is no shortage here.

I had a visit to a little about 35 miles SW of Raleigh, NC yesteray. I wanted to try some Q, I'm out in nowhere and I stopped at a gas station. The woman in front of me gets gas put in her car by the attendant, then tells him she'll stop by tomorrow morning to pay for it. He nods and says "that'll be fine" and walks over to my car. I knew I was in Mayberry!
Guy tells me there's a town 2 miles down the road and it has 2 Grilles. Goldston, NC was a great little town about 2 blocks long and a rr track running right thru downtown. The 2 grilles, were literally next door to each other. I chose Rufus' because it was "Home of the Rufus Burger" and also advertised "Best BBQ for miles". Since there was no other towns for miles, and because the Goldston Grill only listed a special of the day on their outside menu I opted for Rufus'.
I knew it would be good when I saw the large framed picture of Dale Earnhart staring at me from one wall and a picture of the 1999 girls state basketball team, Div 1-A, on the wall behind me.
I ordered the BBQ platter, came with cole slaw and fries, and 2 soft fresh steamy rolls. I got a side of blackeye peas, passed on the boiled taters and tea, which in the south is sweet. The Q was outstanding as well as the slaw and fries. Blackeye peas also contained quite a bit of corn,but it was wonderful as well. Waitress told me to "come back, Hon" when I paid and left. I felt like I walked out of a National Geographic article.

Hey Carlton Pierre...welcome to North Carolina. We have Southern manners, red state democrats and great little Roadfood places hidden everywhere. "Hon" is a pretty standard greeting and leaving comment.

So, are you NC guys trying to keep all the neat places to yourselves? I've lived in Knoxville, TN for 13 years now so am I still a damn Yankee? How about sharing some of these little treasures with the rest of roadfood? My only regret is that I got to sample so little of the hospitality and food.

BTW, speaking of triangles...we have the Knoxville/Oak Ridge/Chattanooga triangle which has a much higher ratio of PhD's (one of the highest education levels in the USA) than the Research Triangle. We just aren't any good at basketball.

Are blackeye peas usually fixed with corn? I'd never had it from a restaurant until this week. It was dang good.

Forgot to mention another neat little place, Pauline's Place, in St. Paul's NC. St. Paul's actually has a Floyd's Barbershop (coincidence ?). Anyway, Pauline's is on the main drag on the east side of town and can't be missed. BBQ & seafood. St. Paul's is about 20 miles south of Fayetteville.

CP, I love this thread. After all the fussin and spittin about chains and various other strongly held opinions, it's nice to read one that's just about road-fooding and great little out of the way spots--not a lot of other fol-de-rol. Thanks so much!!

Thank you, QFan, for the kind remarks. I used to spend a lot of time in the area north of Pittsburgh and I loved going there. Every little town, no matter how small, had at least one Dairy Creme. NC has at least one Q joint in every town and I would think there would be lots of places there to discuss.
