Gyro's in chicago Thu, 11/4/04 2:23 PM (permalink)
I just moved into the Chicago area & have sampled Gyro's from a few places but none too impressive. Can anyone advise as to where one could get the best gyro is chicago & suburbs.

You will never get to the "best" in a town this size. That said, the Athenian Room on Webster and Halsted is good. Many places in Greek Town which is Halsted street starting at about 300 south.

I went to the Parthenon last month which is also on Halstead. Nobody got gyros but everything else was really good so I can imagine that they gyros are as well.

What's the deal with gyros? I've never had one I thought was any good (well, when sober) And if you really think about it , do you really want to eat something has been spinning for days, under who knows what kind of conditions, made from God knows what? (not to say I haven't enjoyed them after the bars as a White Castle alternative!)
I do like something called Sharwirma (sp?) at middle eastern places - very tasty, same presentation, and at least they tell you what it's composed of...
In Chicago, try Old Jerusalem or Reza's - Love these places!

            ...made from God knows what?

Tell you what, the next time you're at a large food store, go find a package of 'hot links' and read the ingredients label.

If anyone out there can tell me what 'mechanically sepaprated chicken' is, I will feel better.

What was the chicken latched onto that it needed to be separated with a machine?

My vote goes for Greek Islands on Halstead. They also have a location in Lombard with the same great food.

Don't get me wrong, the Parthenon and Greek Islands are both great places.

But what if someone is in a hurry and does not want the 'dining experience?'

I must admit approach most sausage type products with some trepidation... But a great dog/sausage is a beautiful thing. It's just that sad, hunk o' formed meat product, oozing grease, spinning for days on end that makes me think of, well - it's just gross.
Would you really eat a dog off the 7-11 hot dog treadmill - kind of he same thing. May as well get your corned beef out of a vending machine. Geez -
I'm going to go warm up a Tombstone...

By the way, a Greek friend of mine claims there is no such thing as a Gyro in Greece, he refers to the product as Greek Baloney.

                      off my high horse...

As for me, the #1 food from Chicago (lived there 17 years but permanently escaped 11 years ago to SF) that I miss is gyros. I do get back there about once a year, and I'd really like suggestions of gyros stands that Roadfooders find delicious. Thanks for sharing your dislike of gyros, folks, but, now, how about those reccommendations for Chicago, Evanston, Skokie, etc.?
