The other thing I wanted to ask about was Parabillas? An Argentinian grilled meat served at your table. Again, I have only seen in Miami. They're everywhere there. carl reitz

This isn't my review--I haven't been there--but it's one example of a place in SF serving them. I'm pretty sure I've seen them in many others (including some that are cheaper than $$$ which in SF means "stuff your wallet before leaving home"): quote:SAN FRANCISCO Alma A pioneer in Latin cuisine, Johnny Alamilla mixes different tastes from all over Latin America. Although the food can be uneven, the ceviches, empanadas and chipi chipi are standouts. (M.B.) RATING: TWO AND A HALF STARS PRICE: $$$ NOISE: FOUR BELLS Dinner 5:30-10:30 p.m. Mon.-Thurs., 5:30-11:30 p.m. Fri.-Sat. Reservations and credit cards OK. Full bar. Difficult street parking. 1101 Valencia St. (at 22nd), San Francisco; (415) 401-8959

A treat I like to pick up when heading to Mets games. It is important to bring good food to a Mets game, so at least something there will be good.

Some years ago we had an exchange student from Chile living in our home. One day, as a treat for us, she decided to make empanadas and she had my wife buy a tenderloin. When my wife brought it home, Jasna cut it up and put it through the grinder. She explained that her mother always ground up tenderloins for empanadas.

On lower Braodway, not too far from the battery there is Ruben's Empanadas- they make great black bean soup too. In Washington D.C. we ate at a place called Julie's Empanadas- but I couldn't tell you where it was.

Tango Argentinean Steakhouse at 5 West Jackson in Naperville, Il. does a real nice job of empanadas. They have beef, pork, chicken and cheese or you can order a combo plate. Just about everything we have had here has been good though I did not like the Argentine form of potato salad because it had peas and carrots.

Natchitoches, LA is famous for their "meat pies" which are similar to an empanda. My brother makes them from scratch for special occasions, but here is a place where you can order them online" http://www.lasyones.com

Hey Lonestar, thanks for the web link. However, that was one spicey meatball paying $67 for a dozen meat pies! I got desperate over the weekend and had an apple empanada from Taco Bell over the weekend. It really was just a fried pie like you'd get at McD's. I've tried making my own using biscuit dough but that was a failure. I may try using a pie crust, or a crescent roll mix. carl reitz

I used to make empanadas every year for a summer solstice paella party that I attended. These days, I usually go to a place in Los Angeles called Empanada Palace, on Sawtelle Bl. in West Los Angeles. Great selection, authentic and downright inexpensive!

They were pricey alright! I'll bet you can find a recipe and make your own dough. My brother says the secret is to put the pies in the freezer a little while before frying them so they do not get soggy with grease.
