I've gone to the KFC in Tokyo, and it is lot better there too. I had a pot pie that was hot, the crust was crunchy and the filling was full of gravy and so tasty. When I came home, I bought the pie several times and each time the crust was soggy and greasy, and the filling was dry and hardly any gravy. Never had it again.

Do I have the Recipe KY Fried Chicken Corp has as their famous recipe?
        Who knows
But I saw the recipe made by Mr. Sander for his original KY Fried Chicken once.
I also knew 2 original franchisee had it made for them.
But I have also heard the original recipe was written above the kitchen door of his Corbin KY restaurant so he would remember it as he use to change it with what he had on hand during the early years.
I have stated before the process was the most important part of what made the chicken so likeable.
Also it helps to have an early pressure fryer also.

Does anyone else remember KFC serving ribs or was that just down here? I haven't eaten there in 15 years. Way too many down home places around here to get really good chicken rather than by a chain. Although when I was a kid in the 70's and 80's we went there every Friday night as it was my mamas day off in the kitchen.

I think I may have answered my own question. There was a place called Sherer's Drive In that Colonel Sanders franchised his chicken recipe to. The only pic I can find of the original store is from 1968 but the place I remembered getting ribs in a KFC bucket was around until the late 70's, very early 80's when an old mine collapsed under it and it closed. Guess the reason I thought they were more than local was that Sherer's flagship store was out near my hometown and was the only place to get KFC and they served more than just KFC chicken maybe? Who knows, I was a kid! lol

An interesting sidebar, Lawlers BBQ and Catfish in Athens is housed in one of those old Sherer's Drive In buildings.

                Yes and No!
Kentucky Fried Chicken had a spin off operation they started up Kentucky Beef.
They had roast Beef sandwiches and Ribs.
Most of their units were opened by KFC franchisees who made them part of their KFC restaurants.
Some freestanding building also have been built.
They had a Jack Daniels sauce.

I also remember good KFC chicken as in the late 60's being just a child when my father went to help open the first KFC franchise in New Orleans, my dad learned how to make chicken from the Colonel. I thought the Colonel was my great grandfather until I was older because we always had these pictures of the Colonel and my dad in our family photo album. Dad would often bring home a bucket of chicken which my brothers and I always looked forward to. Man we would actually fight over the drumsticks. My father was coerced (arm twisted) into leaving KFC by a group of gentlemen (racketeer's) from New Orleans to open the first Popeye's Chicken Franchise, there's no secret here except the role of cayenne pepper is not just to make the chicken taste good it also is spicy to make you crave it more and to purchase lots more soda. My dad know's how to make both styles of chicken, Kentucky and Cajun. There is also a chicken franchise called Lee's Famous Recipe , the owner of this franchise is related to the Colonel. My son, dad, and I recently had dinner at a local KFC. They have the Colonel's picture up all over the place, but they really don't understand quality and service. I did come across a good KFC located in Newport Tennessee on a trip across the state. The food there was delicious. I also tried a KFC while in Tampico Mexico, awful not even close it was a total waste of money and time. It was hard to believe something that looked so close could have tasted so awful. I could not finish more than one bite of any item I tried on my plate, you know the basics, chicken brest, mashed potatoes, cole slaw, and the biscuit. It makes the KFC's here look like home cookin people.

I too remember a more enjoyable Kentucky Fried from the past. Though I have not eaten there (or many other chains) in years. How anyone can get 10 pieces of chicken from one bird is amazing! I would bet that they do in fact use their original recipe. However I would bet the farm that the quality of those ingredients has slipped. The chicken of my youth, in my memory, was indeed more spicy and I think it was a black pepper thing. Not as good, not as much, or not as fresh. Could also have something to do with the truck load of preservatives the pressurize into it now day's. You could probably set a bucket on your porch for a week in July and still eat it after church on Sunday !

Pat, you may be right. They use the original 11 herbs and spices. Just that they add 1 tablespoon of each to 100lbs of flour... (Vs. the cups upon cups like they used to. It's just a thought)...

According to my dad the seasoning is marginally important, it just gives fried chicken a different flavor than someone elses, however the real touch needed to make chicken taste good is in preparation and most of all in how it's cooked (Colonel Sander's and his nephew would never have sold many pressure cooker's otherwise).

Why does KFC taste different in different countries?
I've tried KFC in Australia, Thailand and Hong Kong. I dont think theres 11 spices and herbs

Personally I do not try to imitate although I admire those that do.  I just add what I like which is usually salt, lotsa pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder and chili powder.  Works for me.

I have bought McCormick batter which is a two step process.  Dip in the wet and then dip in the dry.  Great crust with all those spices added.

I've tried this recipe (TC 34d) and it's the closest yet if not right on for KFC OR chicken:

                                      http://kfc.forumup.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=1529&mforum=kfc

I use a pressure fryer at 15 psi (as the Colonel did) and it works real well. Not sure how it would do for pan frying or oven baked chicken, but i would probably use more spice per cup of flower than for the pressure fried version.

ZekeTheCat can you please post the TC 34D recipe instead of just the link because when you go to the website forum, you have to register and the admin hasn't been activating new registrants. I think maybe they aren't bothering anymore. It's been more than a week since I registered and a follow up email requesting activation and nothing but crickets chirping in the silence....so if you could share the full TC 34D recipe that you recommended, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Icysilk - sad to say that site has been near dead for a year or so. The administrator there rarely shows up and doesn't take care of site business. It's a waste of time to try and register there. My own account was deactivated when I changed my profile and I have not been reactivated since -  so no access to  the original TC34d link. It's still a good site though with all of the information pertaining to cooking, equipment and KFC history etc, I did copy the recipe when it first came out a couple years ago :
                                          KFC TC34D
                                          Breading
                                          1 Cup - flour (1/2 cake + 1/2 pastry)
                                          2 1/2 to 2 3/4 tsp - fine flake  Salt
                                          1/4 tsp - MSG (Accent)

                                           11 Herbs/Spices
                                          1 tsp - White Pepper
3/4 tsp - Tellicherry Black Pepper
                                          1 tsp - Sage
                                          3/8 tsp - Coriander
                                          5/16 tsp - Jamaican Ginger
1/4 tsp - Ancho Chile Pepper
3/16 tsp - Tahitian Vanilla Bean, ground
3/16 tsp - Bay Leaf, ground
                                          3/16 tsp - Savory
                                          1/8 tsp - Cloves
                                          1/8 tsp – Cardamom

This recipe is a couple years old now and generally now regarded as close to KFC OR but not quite their yet. It's been tweeked somewhat since it originally was posted.  I've tried it and it's very good in it's own right - but I have doubts about the vanilla bean being in it and a few other ingredients.

Here's another very interesting (current) KFC OR  website - Lilly Bay Spices (in Australia) - a lot of interesting KFC stuff here and also their KFC recipe :

                                          Hope this helps

                                            Zekethecat,
thank you so much. It is a shame that the admin has lost interest because it is a shame that all the good info are hidden behind links that only activated users can view...so much for their mantra "NO MORE SECRETS". really disappointing there but thank you so much for the recipe. My pressure fryer from ebay is suppose to arrive on Monday and I am really looking forward to trying this much heralded version.
Thank you so much for sharing:)

As an aside, I will note that lately we have tried the "original boneless" and it does seem to be spicy like I remember the original being back in the day.  Maybe because it is skinless and therefore less greasy, the spices come more to the fore.

How accurate this guy is, I have no idea....but seems like a good starting point to figure out darn near any FF or store item:
