need pie crust recommendations Mon, 01/10/05 10:20 AM (permalink)
I'm planning to make an apple pie from scratch next weekend, including the crust. However, at some point I may buy a pre-made crust for another pie. Any recommendations on a brand? I hear Pillsbury is pretty good (though no subsitute for a real homemade crust)

Thanks.

I can't make pie crust to save my life and rely heavily on Pillsbury. I've used store brands that were pretty good but can't bring them to mind..just don't use the frozen ones..

dan--it is kinda cheating, but those Pillsbury ones are pretty darn good. Just make sure you roll out the creases, and no one can tell!!!!

And do a search--I think I remember JaneDough or lleechef had posted a good recipe for pie crust awhile back. Just make sure in contains lard!

The Pillsbury ones now come rolled so that there is no crease.......much easier to use. I always keep a couple on hand for emergency-use. Pillsbury are far better than the 2 store brands that I tried.

I seem to have a knack for pie crusts. During my most recent pie party I made two pumpkin pies and one enormous deep dish apple pie, and everyone raved about the flaky crusts. I can't speak to the issue of store-bought crusts because I've never used them, but if you want advice on making crust from scratch feel free to e-mail me.

IMHO, the Pillsbury crusts are superb, and, as mentioned, now come rolled instead of folded, and have no creases. I made a dozen pork pies for the holidays, and the crusts were raved about by all recipients. Thanks, Dough Boy!
