New England burgers?? Wed, 01/19/05 11:19 PM (permalink)
OK, so I hear people talking about Whataburger, Sonic, Cheeburger Cheeburger, In and Out. And I have had some of these and loved them. Fatburger in California is also a top fave. Alas, I live in Boston. No good fast food here. I know we have clam chowder and the freshest seafood anywhere. No more mahi mahi. I want a cheeseburger with bacon and mayo dripping on my shirt. Any help? I'll drive for one.

I thank you and my growing belly thank you.

Not sure where you are in NE...but a couple of my favorites are the White Hut in West Springfield, MA and Wild Willy's in York, ME. The latter was discovered based on a recommendation from this forum, and it was outstanding. Do a search of the old forum articles, and I am sure you'll find more about Wild Willy's. I also had a real good burger at Red's in Wiscasset, ME...I was just lobstered out.

No need to go to York: there's a Wild Willy's on Arsenal Street just outside of Watertown Square. It ain't Whataburger, more's the pity, but it's closest I've gotten to a proper burger here in Boston.

Try RF O'Sullivans in Somerville (282 Beacon Street)....very, very good burgers there.

I also vote for White Hut in Springfield. Their fries are great too. It's very early but I could eat one of their burgers right now! But it would be a long drive from Virginia.

White Hut is an okay burger, but it's not at all what Graham's looking for based on his yearning for In-and-Out, Whataburger or Sonic. He wants a big-ass burger with everything, and that's not what White Hut does. (Big ups for their hot dogs, however.) I repeat: Wild Willy's is the closest I have yet gotten to a really good burger in Massachusetts, and it's certainly closer to the mark of what he's looking for in a burger than White Hut is.

Failing that, Graham, let's meet up in Harvard Square and go on a roadtrip. Nearest Whataburger is in Georgia, which I figure is about an 18-hour drive.

I've heard that Green's Famous Burgers on Berkshire Ave and Page Blvd (Rt 20) in Springfield is good. They supposed steam their burgers. Have yet to try them myself.

Anybody know if Wild Willy's in York, ME is open in the winter?

White Hut is a true "slider" type place....the only one of that type in New England, as far as I know. They never had fries when I went there though...must be a recent addition.

If you're in Boston I have heard that Tim's Tavern on Columbus Ave is legendary for burgers, I have never been there though.

In the suburbs, Comet Hamburgers (Tyngsboro and Peabody and Nashua) makes Connecticut-style steamed cheeseburgers - highly recommended.

I had a pretty good burger in Westfield MA at the Tavern at Court Square. It's in an old post office...pretty cool.
And Westfield's airport has a small cafe with really good food. I didn't have a burger but they were on the menu.
Russell, MA has good ones at the Russell Inn, too. It's a pretty funky place.

Lucky, you and I share our affection for Wild Willy's, although I haven't been to the Watertown location yet.
I haven't heard you mention Mr. Bartleys's Burger Cottage in Harvard SQ., again I have never been, but am curious.

I think Bartley's is terribly overrated: a good but not great burger, nothing more. If I want a burger in Harvard Square, I'll more likely go to Charlie's Kitchen, which isn't any great shakes itself.

In the 70's I used to get hamburgers at a place in Falmouth or Westbrook,Maine.I believe the name was Wasson's.They seemed to be regarded quite highly among the Southern Mainers.I found the burgers to be very good but not in the league of the Great Ones. The best thing about this place was the dining area, which was entirely outdoors.Picnic tables were scattered around so one could eat "al fresco",a pleasant experience during the gorgeous Maine summer. This was 25 years ago,and apparently this place is history now,as I can find no mention at all of it,even of it's passing. It was a bustling and popular place at the time,Im surprised that it receives no mention here or elsewhere.
