Knoxville BBQ

Figure it's time Knoxville had a place to discuss local BBQ, just in case we ever find a good one. I drove by a new place in Clinton tonight, Clinton Hwy., south edge of town. Claimed to have Texas style Q, and I have to say it smelled pretty good as I drove by at 60 mph.


Also, just up the road from there, in Lake City, was a little place called The Unicorn Cafe which looked interesting, and a new bakery whose name I've forgotten.

I'd love it if we could locate some good Q in town.

One of my college roommates was from Knoxville and whenever we were in Knoxville we would eat at a particular Buddy's BBQ. We had two reasons for this. First, the pulled pork sandwiches aren't bad and were within our budget. Second, we would get a draft beer and because you bus your own table and leave the trays next to the door, outside of the crew's view, take the mugs home. We built up a pretty good collection of mugs this way.

This may not be what carlton was looking for when he began this thread, but BBQ in Knoxville always makes me think of going to that Buddy's.

I just saw that M&M BBQ is back open for the season on Middlebrook Pk near Francis Rd. . Never have tried it but many folks say it is good.

The only thing i noticed from my drive by was that they had alot of kingsford charcoal and 20# lp tanks , this is not bad but split hickory
is much better .

Anyone tried this place ?


Also noticed the Smokehouse BBQ on Chapman Hwy & Western Ave. have closed .

Bumper, I tried it about a year ago and it stunk. Perhaps it may be better now.

Anybody been to a place in Townsend called Smokin' Joe's? I just heard about it and was described as a good Q place. I looked it up at www.blountweb.com/smokinjoes
While not in Knoxville, it's still pretty close.

I took "The Mayor" and Janet there last year. It was mediocre at best.

Were the fried pickles any good?

If you want fried pickles you need to come down to Nashville and visit Cock of the Walk. Theirs are very crisp with a tasty batter, it's just pickles I don't like. My former roommate and my girlfriend swear by them. They make a fine catfish dinner as well.

I got turned on to fried pickles last year at the Blue & White in MS and look for them. I can't say I like all that I've had but many of them are pretty good. Is Cock o the Walk downtown?

Cock of Walk had a location off Briley Parkway near Opryland Hotel
a few years ago . Smokin Joes went down hill after 2nd location opened then closed in downtown Maryville .

Cock of the Walk is at 2624 Music Valley Dr., as BUmper said, right off Briley Pkwy near the Opryland Hotel. If you're coming to Nashville let me knowand I'll try to wrangle you a coupon for free fried pickles.

Take my word for it if you're in the Smokies.... Smokin' Joes is awesome! I go to Townsend at least twice a year and no trip would be worth it w/o some excellent BBQ from this great restaurant. They have indoor and outdoor seating (by the stream).

hey all...being a texan, raised on BBQ, the only place in town i'll eat bbq is calhouns. its not quite what i like, but it works. we ate at fats one time on washington pike in east knox and it was vile. i loves smokey's on the corner of middlebrook and division street, but it closed down.

i live on francis rd. and have been tempted by M&M, but heard it wasn't very good. what do you all think? it sure does smell good, but sometimes smells can be decieving.

My son is a waiter at Calhoun's but I've not heard good or bad on the Q. I have heard the ribs are excellent but have not tried them myself.
I wish Knoxville could come up with a decent BBQ joint. Nothing since Sarge's closed as far as I can tell.

I ate at Calhoun's several years ago. It was good but reminds me of Damon's. I like Smokin' Joes because soon as you pull up to park there he is cookin' on his smoker and it smells soooo gooood!! Better yet, it tastes great!

i ate at smokin joe's location in maryville once. it was not nearly as good as people said it would be. but i like my barbeque mesquite and a bit tangy. not sweet, like what is around here. and i agree, sarge's was good. the little "shack" he had on western was good, but the location right off the strip wasnt nearly as good.

Article in today's paper about a BBQ joint out west called F.A.T.S. BBq opening a 2nd location on Merchant Pike. Wondering if anyone has been to either?

BTW, today's food section was about Vidalia onions. Had some good recipes, etc.

i had been to the washington pike locactiona few years ago. it wasnt very good, but it could have been an off day. i'd be willing to give it another go.

NC has an interesting tradition of BBQ guys setting up in parking lots for a few days a week. This go on in Knoxville?

I recall that in Atlanta as well when I lived there in the 80's.

Tried Leo's Pulled Pig . Very good pulled pork have not had chicken or ribs but the pork was very good .

Sides on interest are : Pit tators with green peppers and onions,smoked corn, green beans finished in the smoker .

They also stuff tators with bbq .

Bumper, we have not heard from you in a while. I have tried the BBQ place in Lenoir City and I have to admit that it is not bad.

What we need in Knoxville is a great BBQ place which we have not had in years.

The guy in Erwin, TN had the best around the area and now that he is gone with no option of returning, I guess we will have to travel to Lexington, TN??

I have also tried Leo's Pulled Pig in Lenoir City and have become a fan. Have not tried their ribs or chicken, but enjoy the pulled pork. Their sauces work pretty well, I like their hot and their vinegar sauce (which you have to ask for) is not too bad. Very friendly folks, worth a stop if you're going through Loudon Co.

Although I do not care for Buddy's in general, I will tell you a secret that is very good. If you visit buddy's, order their whole pork butt. It is $5.00 a pound and a whole butt is generally around five pounds. They will deliver it right out of the smoker with bark and fat all attached. It will be dark on the outside on tender on the inside. Believe me, it is very good.

Their hot suace is hot and their mild is very good. Both taste good.

It was run by a Texan and served the best brisket I have ever eaten.
