BEST green chile cheeseburger

The world's best green chile cheeseburger can be found at this wonderful dive in central New Mexico - The Owl Bar in San Antonio, NM. Legend has it that the bar was built for the atomic scientists who tested the first bomb during WWII. There is no better burger anywhere.

I agree with Billyw..........I never travel thru New Mexico on I-25 Las Cruces to Albuquerque without stopping by the Owl Bar. The burger is pefect!..........The only sad part about the Owl Bar is that I only get by there once a year since I moved to Seattle 18 years ago......

While the Owl Bar is great, I posted this in another forum. I highly recommend a green chili cheeseburger, fries and any flavor shake from Lotaburger. Their burgers are some of the best I've ever had. Multiple locations; see website. http://www.lotaburger.com/

The Lotaburger in Bernalillo is usually my first stop from leaving the airport to hitting Santa Fe, start those chile fixes!

Having only had the opportunity to try this item at two locations (The Bobcat Bite on the outskirts of Santa Fe and the 66 Diner in Albuquerque, of which the Bobcat Bite's version was significantly better), I can't really argue with you. But I can say that if the Owl Bar serves a better green chile cheeseburger than the Bobcat Bite, it must truly be exceptional. The next time that I'm in that part of the world, I'll have to give it a try. Exactly where is it? I tried to "Mapquest" San Antonio, New Mexico and I got three different locations.

San Antonio is just south of Socorro on I-25 between Albuquerque and Las Cruces, very near the Trinity site. I think there is an Owl Cafe in Albuquerque that also serves a green chile cheeseburger, building was in the shape of an Owl's head but haven't been to in years. Although I am in Santa Fe every year, I have never been to Bobcat Bite, usually other foods occupy my time, just a quick stop at Blakes satisfies my GCB fix, on to better things!

The Owl Cafe in Albuquerque is just a poor imitation of the original in San Antonio. And I agree, the green chile Lotaburger from Blake's is outstanding. But be warned - green chile is addicting!

The Bobcat Bite is clearly the greatest Green Chile Cheeseburger in existence. Not just because of the chile, but because the burger is a 9oz. beauty made of fresh ground chuck. I should know - I've eaten a lot of burgers. www.bobcatbite.com

Green chili burgers must be a regional thing. Never seen or heard of them around here... But I'll take an olive burger anyday!

Finished off however you want! But, IMHO, cheese is a must to hold them in place!

According to Google Earth, The Owl Bar and Steakhouse is on US380 about 7/10s of a mile east of I-25. Is this correct? I need to know as I'm headed out to NM in June and I plan to have several GCCBs!

I had my first green chile cheeseburger, with mushrooms, at Presciliano's in Cuba, NM a week ago last Friday for lunch. That evening we had dinner at a home in Flora Vista, NM and I had my second green chile cheeseburger. The second was much better - but the first was good.

lotaburger is overrated..whataburger is far better.. but when it comes to green chile cheeseburgers bobcat bite sets the standard.. the owl cafe is very good. then again, it's hard to find a bad chile cheeseburger in new mexico.

After living in NM for about 65 years, I can testify that the Owl is OK, but has been decreasing in quality, increasing in price, decreasing in portion over the years. We quit going. Marketing remains strong, though. Not to despair, though… The Buckhorn across the street is excellent - learned of it from several locals who apparently avoid the Owl. 60 miles east in Carrizozo is The Outpost - which has been winning state green chile cheeseburger competitions for a while. The Outpost is a major destination bar/dive for people in all walks of life from as far away as the Navajo Reservation and Santa Fe. About 10 miles further east of the Outpost in Capitan is Calamity Jane's - about as good as The Outpost.

Ok, what kind of cheese does Bobcat use? And is anything known about the seasonings used for the meat? I like their sirloin chuck mix idea. We can get some pretty good frozen Green Chiles here in Texas. Hatch is the brand I think. Joe
