If you can't be eating it, the next best thing is looking at great food.

Fantastic pictures, thanks! I really enjoyed looking through them all, it reminded me of our trip to Malaysia a couple years back. The hawker stall food is some of the best in the world, I really miss that!

Great pics!!! Apparently, you are a fan of Thai food, have you made it out to Lotus of Siam in LV? If so, what are your thoughts? I went there last weekend and had one of the greatest Thai meals of my life.

I haven't made it to Lotus of Siam, but have heard plenty of great comments.
When we make it to LV, we will definitely give it a try.

It's really hard to find food that compares with the carts, stalls and small shops of SEA.
When someone specializes in one item, they usually do it well.
When a restaurant tries to be all things to all people, they usually fail.

Anyone who likes great food should really try a trip to Thailand.
With the exception of the airfare ($700~$800), everything is dirt cheap.

You can get really comfortable hotels for $20~$30.
With few exceptions, we never spend over a buck or 2 for a meal.
Most of the items shown ran 75¢ to $1.

The first photos, 89 Baht, was an all-you-can-eat proposition for "89 Baht" (about $2.25).

DAMN, I need a vacation now..... anyone up to it up here?

S. American. Does the hygeine in Bankok concern you? Is there a time when the humidity is not so high. Wife was there a few years ago and indicated that they had to change clothes several times daily?

Wife really enjoyed the market in Bankok.

Very interesting pictures, but one seems a little out of place. Did you catch the Thai enchilada, complete with a small flag with a mustached Mexican graphic stuck in the food? Does seem a little unusual for a Thai street market.

While in Bangkok, I typically take 3 showers a day.
Yes, it's hot and humid.
It varies from season to season, but not much.
A cool winter day might drop into the mid to high 80s.

I've been going to Bangkok once or twice a year, for up to 3 months at a time, for over 8 years.
Although I did pick up a "bug" a couple times, I've never been poisoned.
I chalked the bugs to the water.

I always try for "hot-off-the-grill" or something that moves quickly.
If stuff has been sitting around, I will head somewhere else.

I have Hep A and typhoid vaccinations.
Hep A is good anywhere, and typhoid is good for seafood eaters.

That's from Senor Pico's, pretty good Mexican for Thailand.
That was the most expensive meal I ate last trip, about $7 PP.

The tempura, suki and potato salad were diversions also.
That tempura set, with a glass of Thai tea and a small fruit plate, ran less than $3.

God pics...make me want to chow down.

For the record, I had my first-ever taco in Okinawa, Japan. Asians are not ignorant of foods from the rest of the world and finding Mexican food in Asia isn't as surprising as you might think.

Oh, and at the beach in Pattaya (Thailand) there was a Swenson's ice cream parlor (it's a local San Francisco chain)--go figure.

One thing that surprised me a little about my own trip to Thailand was that the Tahi food in Thailand wasn't very different from the Thai food here in San Francisco. Obviously, the culinary range of most US Thai restaurants is somewhat limited, but what they do serve (at least here in SF where there are plenty of expatriate Thais) tastes to me about like what I ate there.

Does anyone know if there are any Thai restaraunts in the U.S. that sell fried insects? If so where, I would love to give it a try.

In reference to durians, I beleive that Melissa's distributes them to specialty stores nationwide.

BT, fortunately durian does not taste like it smells. I tried it once and that was enough.

In a previous life, I spent a lot of time traveling around Southeast and South Asia. The basic rule of thumb is that if it is cooked fresh or comes out of a hot pot of some sort, it's been through temps hot enough to kill bad bad bugs. It's the stuff out of ambient temperature pots -- you never know how long it's been there -- that will get ya'. And never eat anything that has mayonaise in it. This includes airline food -- I've got some stories. I'm not sure what the rule is on fried insects.... A few years back, I remember reading about Bangkok street vendors -- in a health sweep, it was found that about 75% of them were selling food with major health risks.

And Stupid American is right about water. Always drink bottled stuff. In addition to Hep A, a Hep B vaccination is a good idea, too.

Durian is cool. In the Philippines, durian is not permitted in cabin luggage. It stinks up the cabin air too much.

My company hotel was at the bottom of Sukumvit Road, Soi 3 or something like that. Flying in, we would eat light on the airplane, dump the bags, and immediately head up to an open-air eatery at about Soi 11. That was food....

Cool season pretty much corresponds to winter in North America. Comfortable -- mid-80s and little rain.

I'll pass on the insects but I looked at your pics and that Pad Thai looks to die for --- those long stalks of green onions YUM!

That was the first pad thai I've actually liked.
I've found most to be too sweet.
