A few years ago I drove along the Southeastern coast and remember seafood restaurants advertising "calabasas" (?) shrimp. What kind of dish is this? Is it like "popcorn shrimp?"

It's Calabash Shrimp...tiny or popcorn shrimp popular in the south and the "Calabash" is for the spot on the coast of South Carolina where everyone goes to eat seafood.

Calabash is a tiny town in North Carolina just across the line from South Carolina. It gave its name to a style of cooking any kind of seafood in a light breading that has spices in it. To make it at home, you soak the seafood in buttermilk for a short time then roll it in a mixture of 1/2 self-rising flour to 1/2 self-rising cornmeal adding a small amount of Old Bay seasoning, red pepper, black pepper, garlic powder & dill or lemon pepper seasoning. Easy on thespices or it will overpower the seafood. Fry as usual . FANTASTIC if done right.
