Has anybody ever had a Maid Rite from a small town in Southwest Ohio called Greenville. It is one of the tastiest sandwiches that i have aver had, and whenever i am in the area (visiting family) I make sure to make my way there and eat so many of them that i have trouble walking afterwards. They are kind of a mix between a hamburger and a sloppy joe. It is sweetened ground meat cooked in a double boiler and with beer, mustard, and of course some secret ingredients. It is slapped on a small bun with onions, pickles and more yellow mustard. I get mine with cheese, and they are served in white wax paper. I press mine before i eat it so that the meat stays in the bun better. They are so good.

Maid-Rite is a midwestern chain headquartered in Iowa. I love them (grew up in Iowa) and wish there was one in the Chicago area. www.maid-rite.com

My wife who is an Iowan keeps telling me about them. She had them all the time as a kid at 4H meetings etc., she says they are a lot like sloppyjoes but if made right ....way better. The beef used in these Maid Rites was from local farms and fresh. I keep forgetting to get them when I am up around Clear Lake/Mason City area, I can always remember to try Iowa Tenderloin's they have to be one of the best sandwiches (right after Egg Plant Parm.) in the World.

Turns out the Maidrite website includes a list of new locations, one being in Lima, which is a lot closer to me, so I will head up there. Got maps, phone numbers, and hours of operation printed out, and will report back on this Maid-Rite as well as Kewpees in Lima and Crabills in Urbana

The only ones I see are the 2 locations in Peoria, Il. when we visit MIL. We go to the one on University for breakfast but the new one off War Memorial does not serve breakfast.

The Maid-Rite in Greenville, OH has never been a part of any chain. It's been a stand alone business for the past 70 years and a roadfood institution though I suspect that it may have been inspired by the earlier maid rites in Iowa.

"inspired" is a good description for the Greenville Maid-Rite. Easily the best roadfood find I have encountered in my short roadfood experience thus far....

Did you carry on the tradition of leaving some gum behind?

I worked in downtown St. Charles, a friend worked off of Kirk and we would meet there for lunch.
