Pudgies Pizza

Any one at all remember the hole-in-the-wall Pizza joint called Pudgies?

Is there even one left?

The last Pudgies I ever went to was years ago in Penn Yan, NY.
Aweful pizza, great memories.

Yes, I believe there is still one in Sayre, PA, as well as in a town directly south of there (name escapes me).....May also still be some in Elmira, NY..

Not sure though, but at least this was the case as of 2 years ago or so (last time I was in the area)..

It's an odd place....I've had really amazing pizza there, as well as horrible...

We had several Pudgie's in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (about an hour Southeast of Elmira), but they all closed up sometime in the 80's. I remember the pizza being pretty greasy, but not bad...not great either.

I remember when just about every small city or village had a Pudgies Pizza (or two).
I seem to remember the pizza being not too too bad when you got it there, but delivery was not so good. They used to deliver to our school for pizza day one Friday per month and cheese pizzas every friday during lent. It was that or those aweful school fish squares - Catholic or not, that's what they served...what a choice!
I went for the pizza.

I think the one in Ithaca is still open...I agree with the previous posters; in general, it was pretty average, and could be very, very greasy at times.

There's one in Cortland NY, just being remodeled. The pizza is OK, but they do a nice job on the wings.

The Pudgie's that was in Sayre, PA has been through 2 changes of name. It's current incarnation is known as Howie's Pizza, and despite the changes still serves the same exact pies that it did under the Pudgie's name. They're still consistently inconsistent with their pie quality. When it's good, it's good, but when it's bad...fugeddaboutit.

And fredferris is right, there's still some Pudgie's in the Southern Tier of NY, in the Elmira/Horseheads area.

there's also 1 in Corning NY, which I know cause it's moving over near a used cd shop I frequent every time I'm in town.

My parents were both from Elmira, and no trip there was complete without a pizza party at my Great-Aunt Alice's house (across the street from St. Casimir's) with Pudgie's pizza and all the cousins.

Pudgies Pizza has a great place in Horseheads, NY, 2 in Elmira, NY, Mansfield, PA. Elmira Southside Pudgies has the best Pizza. I do believe Bernadette Cleary owns the Horseheads Pudgies and one of the Elmira ones.
The one in Penn Yan may have had bad pizza, but you get the best for the original pudgies on the Southside of Elmira.

Further update: Pudgies has expanded their chain by another store that recently opened up in Waverly, NY. Stopped by to try it the other day, and I can tell you it's the exact thing you expect from Pudgie's. Flavor took me right back to childhood and the pizza parties we used to have in class, order 2 sheets one with pepperoni, one plain.

Hi..I read on the website they have on in Rochester, NY now too! It is so good to bring back the memories of good food, especially Pudgies Pizza. Enjoy!!

I'd like to clarify my posting from earlier. at one point it looked like the Pudgie's was going to move over near where a fairly decent used compact disc store called Crunge Records was located, but one thing led to another, and while Pudgie's did relocate to another part of Corning, so did the cd store I thought was gonna be nearby, the cd store moved onto Market Street.

We have a Pudgie's Pizza here in Brick NJ. It's been here for well over 15 years. I don't know if it's a part of any chain.It's a small Italian place with a small restaurant too. It serves superb(and I mean that from the bottom of my Italian heart)pizza. Local Brick folks..is this a chain...or just a coincidence??

I had fond memories of going to Pudgies Pizza when I was a kid up visiting my grandfolks; I think there was one off of Carter street in Rochester.

A few years back I was back up visiting the finger lakes and saw that Pudgies in Penn Yan, so we ate there. Like you say - awful pizza This must have been over 10 years ago though.

Pudgies in Sayre, PA is now a "Howies" ... same look, different name.

I stopped in a Pudgies in Williamsport (or a burb) last night. Same pizza I remember from childhood.

Horrified to find NO nutritional info available on it ANYWHERE.

I'd be horrified if I went to a pizzaria that cared about the nutritional info on their pizza.

They're not the same.
The chain we're talking about is "Pudgie's Pizza."
The place in your town is called "Pudgy's Pizza."

OMG - Pudgies Pizza really is so great! My family, up near Williamsport, PA (where Pudgies is, on old Route 15, near Lycoming Creek Road), has had Pudgies throughout the past 20+ years. In fact, we just had a 32-slice pizza for Christmas, and that thing was gone in 30 minutes. The sauce is so good! Mmmm - makes me hungry to run up a couple hundred miles now to order one!

They really should expand Pudgies to more locations!

I think it is still there IIRC at least as of my last visit. I seem to recall the food we ate was pretty greasy

Last time we were there we stayed at The Viking; it was a bit rustic but nice waterfront view.

I love it up there; too bad for the high taxes or I could own property there.

The bar I own in Oswego, NY used to be a Pudgies Pizza. I remember going there when I was in college in the late 80s-early 90s. It closed in 1993, became an Indian restaurant for less than a year, and now it's Greene's Ale House & Grille. I don't remember the pizza or wings much because it was generally eaten at 2am, but the "Party Pack" was a great deal for college kids. You got a 32 slice sheet pizza, 2 dozen wings, and a quart of soda for about $12.99. Hard to beat in college.

I know exactly where your bar is. My brother, a student at SUNY Oswego in the 80's, live in the first or second house on the right on West 8th, off of Bridge Street. You could see Pudgie from his porch. That house got a beat down. When visiting, Pudgie's was a quick and convenient way to get some food before nickel progressions at Broadwells. I definately remember the party pack. Great deal. Not great pizza, but the wings were decent.
