Pimento Sandwiches at Soda Fountains Mon, 08/15/05 7:10 PM (permalink)
Back in the 50s and 60s most drug stores had soda fountains. How many of you remember the pimento cheese sandwiches that they served? They were simply toasted white bread with pimento cheese on one slice and a little mayo on the other with lettuce and sliced tomatos. The sandwiches were always cut in half and served with dill pickles and usually with an order of fries. Add a fountain coke and you had a really good lunch. Seems like pimento cheese sandwiches were pretty much standard fare at these soda fountains.

Never saw one of those at a soda fountain, but I've consumed plenty of 'em at home.

I remember tuna salad sandwiches, chicken salad sandwiches, egg salad sandwiches and BLTs at soda fountains, but I have no recollection of any pimiento cheese sandwiches.

That's a laugh. I was kidding an old friend yesterday. He's from North Carolina. We're old boozing buddies (actually, still buddies but no more drinking for us) and when I visited him at his parents' house, decades ago, that's what he went for after a night out: pimento spread on wonderbread with miracle whip. Personally, I liked them too, except for the Miracle Whip, but I'm sure that particular topic has been beaten to death somewhere on these boards.

You mean Miracle Whip vs Mayonnaise? Oh, no. It's never come up.

If you lived in the south, as I did, and do again, you could find those pimento cheese sandwiches at soda fountains or anyplace else that served sandwiches. In fact you still can in a few places that serve sandwiches but it usually isn't "homemade". I still love pimento cheese with either MW or mayo on lightly toasted white bread. Think I'll have that for lunch.

I think the walgreens in downtown miami served those back in the early/mid 60's.. I buy the stuff in the plastic tubes, (hot style), and pig out every so often.... On white is the best, but also good with Roman Meal bread too!
