We are looking for a clam bake on the beach, at either Hilton Head Island or Myrtle Beach, SC. Does anyone know of any? Preferably during July or August. Thanks!

Sorry, I cant help you, but you have raised an interesting question. Around the Hudson Valley clambakes were held by some organization or another every weekend in the Summer. I am yet to see an add for a local clambake this year. I suspect several factors have joined to cause this sad lack of clambakes. The price of clams has skyrocketed in recent years. A lot of dieters probably stay away because of the richness of the food. A general loss of "community" where people would rather stay home than join with large crowds to eat. And now the price of gas will certainly limit the travel plans of many people. Cheers, John

I just attended my first clam bake of the year, at Hinerwaldels Grove in Syracuse. Unfortunately it was a Republican fundraiser...nothing against Republicans, some of my best friends belong, but politics, and food don't mix! The clams were great, as was the Gianelli's sausage and peppers sandwich. Oh, and the beer was cold!

Most of the clambakes I've ever enjoyed were political fundraisers - that's part of the fun. Of course, like me, one has to have been born with an errant gene that favors political stump speeches and other such empty blather along with the clams and corn and beer. The political party hardly matters (I'm a diehard Democrat) but it is wise to avoid the "true believers" of the extremes of right and left. Cheers, John
