Not for nothing, but I remember my Italian grandmother used to pronounce "sandwich" as "sangwich." (tho she made delicious ones, even prosaic tuna fish...) Does anyone else have "variations" on the word?

Hey...fugetaboutit (and yes that is one word)...

Along with oil=earl, terlit=toilet, abeets=pizza and many others...my little Sicilian grandma also said sang-wich. She was born in Italy, but learned her English in and around NYC. You don't hear much of this around NY any more, but interestingly, in SE Massachusetts and RI, where there are many Portuguese, I have heard similar pronunciation. Be interesting to see if any one ever figured out the roots of such accents/pronunciation.

Let's not forget the infamous 'samwich'. It was a favorite of my younger brothers.

My grandma also said "bretzel" for "pretzel" (which probably belongs on the "snacks" posts...) but it was a surprise to me to be in Germany and hear the locals also say "bretzel!".
Not for nothing (another Eye-Talian expression I think) but it I really felt good to know I'm not the only one here with the sangwich grandmother!!!

My father, who is an Italian immigrant (living here in the States for well over 20 years) still pronounces it sangwich...and his "th" sounds still sound like soft "d"'s!

I remember a lot of people saying sangwich in New Haven when I was growing up. Of course, that was about 150 years ago.

Back in the days when Southwestern Connecticut was rural!!!

Michael, btw, I've never been on the Merritt Parkway, I have friends who take it occasinonaly for business travel. I mentioned the fruit and vegetable stands and they looked at me like I was on drugs!

Tommy2dogs: This deserves a post over in "Snacks" section. Now these are real German "bretzels"!
