 Pizza in Italy

I recall that when I've been to Italy (at least Venice and Ancona - where my relatives live) pizza is not all that common. And it is usually not a "pie", and is small, flat and rectanglar. Does anyone know if they make large round pies in Italy like in US? Do they serve it by the slice or a whole pie? Toppings? (dessert pizza????)

    I know in Rome pizza is quite common and popular....especially in the Tratevere neighborhood, where they have quite a few wonderful pizzarias. It's really quite an experience...they are strictly carry out, and pies are kept behind glass counters like a deli here in the set lines either (like everywhere in Italy) literally have to plow you way through the throng and shout your order to whoever feels like paying attention to you behind the counter...but BOY IS IT EVER WORTH IT!

    As to your other question, never seen a round pizza in Italy.

      What???? From the STG (Specialita' Traditionale Garantita) regulations regarding Pizza Napoletana STG:

      "Pizza Napoletana" STG is presented as a product from the oven, round in shape, with a variable diameter than it should not surpass 35 cm, (14 inches), with the edge raised (crust), and with the central covered by the ingredients. The central of the pizza base will be 0.3 cm, (.11 inch thick), with crust 1-2 cm (.4-.8 inch). The pizza should be soft, elastic, and easily foldable into a "booklet".

        There is plenty of round pizza in Italy- at least in Rome, Capri, and Sorrento.

          Simply put pizza in italy is faccacia w/ fresh ingredients if your having anything else it's because it was Americanized.From a Son of a italian immigrant.My father told me all about pizza in Italy one time when we where back in italy and he took me from northern italy to the island of Sicily in Palarmo where his great grand father was from and he explained the origin of Italian pizza it was so awesome hearing all about it.My old man is the best!!!!

            pizza was an invention of the neopolitans. in naples, the two places that argue over being the originators make the thin crusted round pizzas, not the thick crusted faux-cacia. thinking the thin crusts cooked in wood fired ovens is a backdraft by italian americans is, well, it's just wrong. my parents taught me columbus discovered america...............
