Gray's Caferteria/Mooresville, Indiana Tue, 10/25/05 11:41 AM (permalink)
I went to Gray's Cafeteria in Mooresville,Indiana for dinner. I took 2 of my grandsons, ages 11 & 5. The 11 year old was in heaven. It was his 1st visit and he was not excited about going to a cafeteria. He thought it would be like his school cafeteria. Boy, wa he surprised!! At Gray's the waiting line is just a few feet from all of the food, so you can both see & smell what is offered that day. He is just starting to get a boy-sized appetite and he was in heaven- roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, rolls to die for, pumpkin pie with real whipped cream. The 5 year old is a picky eater, but he ate every bite of his chicken leg and macaroni & cheese.

Lucky for me this was a fried chicken liver night. Gray's have the best chicken livers. Light, crispy crust with creamy insides. I also had great cornbread dressing with lots of diced celery and onions. My dessert was a huge piece of wonderful butterscotch pie. Both boys dug in to help me eat my pie, I got just a few forkfuls.

The waitress' are wonderful. Three waitress' came up and carried our trays to a table while I corraled the boys. I was called "Hon" and "Sweety" several times. I loved it!!

Gray's is in Mooresville, In on Rt 37 south of Indianapolis. don't miss it.

I second your recommendation Corabeth. Both times we've stopped there we were quite happy with the results.

This place sounds great. I have not been to a good cafeteria in years. I do not think we have even one cafeteria in this area.

Their pies are outstanding too. It's hard for me to pick anything but the fried chicken, but I have tried the fried oysters, which were very good too.

I really, really like this place. I haven't had the chance to try the fried chicken, but I can attest how good the meatloaf and the chicken and noodles are. Plus, the desserts are so good, I can never just get one. The butterscotch pie and the banana cream pie are my favorites. The lines are always long, but don't be concerned. They move fast and you get to preview the days selection while you wait.

This thread brought back wonderful memories of taking our 107-year old "cousin" to lunch at Grey's Cafeteria many times and how she loved going there. She lived in Avon, just north of Plainfield, IN, and we visited her whenever we could and always took her to lunch at Grey's. It was always such fun watching her go down the line choosing what she wanted. She's gone now but our memories linger on, both of her and of Grey's, whose food is beyond wonderful.

                      Donna,
Thanks for sharing that memory, it triggered thoughts of traveling with my Mother and how we would discuss her favorite places to stop for lunch and dinner and how she would enjoy places like Greys, and the South-Side Inn in New Albany, IN. Those are good memories for us!

Wow...Gray's is such a good place for comfort food. I grew up in Martinsville and big family dinners out was either the local Poe's cafeteria (now gone) or the little longer trek to Gray's. We still go there every so often as my family is still in the area.

Don't forget the amazing strawberry shortcake in the summer...plus the fact that two people can get enough food for two meals, plus three desserts, for around $25.

I ate at Gray's about three weeks ago while in Indy and finally got to try the fried chicken, which was every bit as good as the Sterns and other have said. But, the highlight for me is still the sides, especially the mac & cheese and the great desserts, with the banana cream pie being my favorite. This place is one of my very favorite Roadfood restaurants.

I thought it was Gray Brothers Cafeteria. I ate there in May. Even though the line was long (at 3:30 on a Sunday afternoon!) it went faster than one would expect. Check out http://www.graybrotherscatering.com/ and click on "Cafeteria" for more information.

I’m going tomorrow with a friend from College. He lives in Minneapolis now and tries to go every time he comes into town.

It has been over a year since I’ve been even though it is only 30 minutes from where I live.

I plan on getting fried chicken, fried chicken livers, mac and cheese and coconut cream pie.

                                    I can't wait.

                                          Here are some pictures!

I got a piece of white meat, a piece of dark meat, mac and cheese, stuffing with white gravy, coconut cream pie, and two rolls. It was better than heaven. Sadly, they didn’t have fired chicken livers. Their website says they serve them on Tuesday, but apparently things change.

I haven't been to Gray's for several years, but I agree that the fried chicken livers are ambrosia. The fried chicken is very good, too, but in my opinion, not as quite as good as what was served at the now-defunct Laughner's cafeteria chain (not to be confused with MCL cafeterias, which are OK, but several steps below Gray's), or Hollyhock Hill (admittedly, not a cafeteria). I enjoy Gray's pies, also. I have to say that I consider the rolls at Gray's their least successful offering. (I used to love Laughner's breads, especially their biscuits.) But that's a minor point. Gray's chicken livers alone are worth the trip.

The last time I was at Gray's, it was a Saturday, so at least at that time, that was "a" chicken liver day.

That tears it! I opted to spend extra time in Nashville so I just headed straight for the airport. Next time I am stopping!

Beautiful pics AaronM! That fried chicken and macaroni & cheese look so good. Can you please tell me which pies are being shown? It looks like a coconut cream, a butterscotch and two peanut butter chocolates. How were they?

                                                    You are correct.

I got the coconut cream. It was excellent. I also took a bite(or 3) of the butterscotch and a bite of the peanut butter. I’d say the butterscotch was the best of the three, followed closely by the coconut cream. I usually love peanut butter pie, but this one was only ok. Most of the time I go to Gray’s I get the chocolate pie, which I love.

What I always find to be most amazing about the pies is the price. The butterscotch and the coconut cream pie were $2.35 a slice. I believe the peanut butter pie was just over $3.

Another place in Indy that has great pie at reasonable prices is Shapiro’s…but I have a felling you know that all ready.

That is some mighty fine pie eating you did! Of the three you mentioned, the only one I have had was the butterscotch and it was wonderful. My favorite is still the banana cream, though. I need to try that chocolate on my next visit.

The thing that amazes me about Gray's Cafeteria, is that they serve such high quality food in such huge amounts. Those two things typically don't go together.
