Oklahoma burgers Tue, 11/22/05 6:59 AM (permalink)
Several years ago, maybe 10?, one of the food mags, I think it was BA, had an article about a small town in Oklahoma with 4 burger joints. Each of them cooked their burgers by starting with a pile of chopped onions on the griddle, the pattie would then be pressed onto the onions.

Does anyone know where this might be? Also, is this method of integrating the onions a common practice in Oklahoma?

Thanks, doug

That would be El Reno Ok--Jonnie's. Sid's. Robert's. and Jobes all serve "onion burgers"--where the onions are pressed into the meat as it cooks---but my favorite inion burger foint is Billy's in Elk City---not too far from El Reno.Billy's shakes and fries are killer!!!----The onion burger is commen in western Okla---although the whole state really is Burger Heaven----we raise alot beef here , ya know!

A friend of mine bough his starting herd of Limosine cattle in a place out of OKC. He bought a heard of 40 cattle. His herd is now up to close to 800. The beef from these animals is suppose to be superior.

I would guess from this that the burgers from OK would be super.

My friend had the grand champion bull at the Tennessee state fair. I disagreed with him when he decided that his bull was getting old and sent him to the pen. I would have kept him around and been proud but money is money.

Tiki, you're the best. That's been on my mind for a couple of years now. Don't know when I'll get there, but guess I'll have to try 'em all.

        Thanks again, Doug

tiki's recommendations are reviewed on this very site! In fact, the Stern's did a write up on a bunch of these places several years ago in their monthly Gourmet magazine column. Is it possible this is the article you're referring to?

I just saw Billy's on the home page. I wonder if the 'miles worth driving" will be skewed by my 1357 miles when I make the trip this spring!
