It is our favorite soft ice cream in CT - love a nice soft serve vanilla here... just the best!!! The best hard, homemade ice-cream by far is Ferris Farm in Newtown, CT... the cow's are outside, the flavors are fresh, the ice-cream is smooth and creamy - and the portions are enormous for the price.

Better than Dr. Mike's in Bethel?

          Impossible!

How Ice-Cream Shop Got Its Name

''Dr. Mike'' is alive and well and living in Weston. My name is Dr. Michael S. Burnham and Dr. Mike's Ice Cream Shop was named after me.

The shop was conceived and started by my daughter, Mary Burnham, and her partner, Peter Seltzer. They came to me and asked whether they could use ''Dr. Mike'' as the name for the shop and I consented.

Your article, ''A Small but Sweet Success'' (Aug. 21), gives none of the true background as to the starting of the shop and gives no credit to my daughter, who was the motivating factor in conceiving and developing the whole idea of Dr. Mike's Ice Cream Shop.

Better than Dr. Mike's? Dr. Mike's is very good. But, Ferris Farm for us is better. The quality and flavor selection is extraordinary - they change daily. They're gonna open up on April 12th - so we know it is really spring when it's ice cream season. Ridgefield rules for soft serve - it is awesome...For our taste, Ferris Farm totally trumps the others in the area for hard ice cream in our book. Flavor, texture - creamy - Just amazing quality - and great prices as well. (last summer loved the strawberry short-cake ice-cream...real strawberries, butter pound cake mixed into creamy vanilla, Blueberry cheesecake, real peach with big chunks of fruit, various chocolate flavors that were awesome (their basic chocolate is so great)- can't recall the name of one that had chocolate ice cream, caramel swirls and walnuts, wow - Elvis'dream was banana ice cream, with peanut butter and chocolate chips, orange pineapple ice ream - had real bits of orange peal, pina colada with nice chunks of pineapple and coconut all mixed in) Plus, they have various sizes for children's cups/cones, small, large - and mix in's too. Very generous portions. Real whipped cream for sundaes and banana splits, etc. - But sitting out there on a nice evening with a cone of some fabulous flavor - looking at the cows - just the perfect ending to the day on a spring/summer evening. See ya down at Ferris ( Route 302), Newtown, CT,

For soft-serve, Ridgefield is the best, but there hard ice cream is not made on the premise. I believe it is the made by Buck's, who also distributes to Scoops in Wilton and Swirl in Geroegtown, CT.
