Pepe's

With regard to the newest review of Frank Pepe's I have to ask, if the reviewer is, as he says, a purist, why did he opt for an apizza with pepperoni instead of a plain pie with just sauce and parmesan cheese. Years ago, a person ordering a pie from Pepe's with pepperoni would have been on the receiving end of a blank stare as pepperoni was not among the toppings offered.

I eat (or take out from) Pepe's every couple of weeks (Modern the rest of the time). For eat in, its all about the clam pie. Mozzarella (ie Scamozz) does not come automatically on ANY Pepes pizza, but is ordered separately as an ingredient. My absolute favorite pizza (besides clam, or for take-out) is just sauce, pepperoni and grated cheese. Their pepperoni is the best I've ever had, its got a very fine texture, and is tremendous when the edges curl and get crispy. With mozzarella on a pepperoni pie I it a bit greasy. I've been trying to find out the pepperoni supplier forever, the only other place I've had it is First and Last in Hartford (both restaurants declined comment, and Im not one to go through garbage dumpsters)


BTW, a Pepes web site is coming soon. It was up as "under construction" a few weeks ago, with some pictures of the new restaurant (also under construction) in Fairfield. Although I've been hearing it will open mid-January, I've driven by and doubt it will be finished that soon. Supposedly they are (trying) to re-create the coal-burning brick oven from Wooster Street, good luck ;-) I've been begging my girlfriend to go apply in Fairfield as a waitress :pimp:

Growing up in New Haven my family used to go the Pepe's on Wooster Street every other week. One week it was Pepe's, the next Sally's. When I was a teenager -- driving -- I'd most often go to The Spot.

When I was in junior high school Pepe's opened a place on Whalley Avenue in Westville, where I lived, and we'd head down there after school nearly every day. My standard order was a small plain pie, which meant sauce and parmesan cheese, along with a bottle of birch beer or orange soda. That would come to a total of 45-cents. The soda was a nickel. If I was flush, I might spring for a small with mozzarella at 60-cents. And, if I was really loaded I'd get one with sausage for 80-cents. Of course a small pie then was about 14 inches across.
