Toasted buns Sun, 01/8/06 11:16 AM (permalink)
Anyone have a idea how to toast buns without the bun toaster that runs it through and drops it out? I have a cart/trailer and have limited space but would really like to offer this....It also needs to be pretty fast....I know I am asking for a lot but I thought it might be worth a shot.

Do you mean hotdog buns? Does your cart/trailer have electric? (a small toaster oven maybe?) of course with a grill/griddle you just toss the buns on the surface. Personally, toasted buns just seem stale.

Well I sell more bbq than dogs most of the time so it would be a hamburger bun. I would like to do both. How long does it take on the griddle?

I wouldn't think it should take more than a couple minutes depending on heat of griddle and degree of toastiness desired. Experiment... toss a bun on the griddle and see..

Ok. I'll do the joke. My last car has the car seat heaters. On a cold day, toasted buns are nice.

I adore toasty buns.........all firm and warm and......

                  oh.........BREAD buns

                  sowwy.......my bad.......

places around here for most part slab a bit of soft butter or margarine OR even better......the spray "I can't believe it's not butter"(no calories , fats or bad stuff) and toss them on the grills for a few moments.......depending on the grill temp, usually about 30 to 40 seconds

I always grill the buns on the griddle when Im make Burgers,Brush the bun with a little butter and leave it on one side till nice and brown. And for a extra taste I will slide it over on the grease side for my special customers.

At Buckos we used to slab a bit of Mayonaise on and stick it on the griddle. Good stuff.

I'm not sure where to find one but they do sell bun rollers, that u stick a block of butter in and sit on the grill. It has a little hamster wheel in it and you just roll the bun over the wheel and its buttered then just slap it on the grill. It only takes a minute or 2 to toast up nice.

Oftentimes, I feel a toasted bun gives it the coup de grace. It can't make a mediocre dog great, but it helps. And it makes a really good dog even better.

More importantly, if you suspect the rolls aren't fresh on a certain day, but want the dog anyway, a toasted roll makes up for it.

With a New England style Hot Dog Bun, Butter and Toasting is mandatory !!
With the Ordinary side-split Bun, it becomes optional !

We used to offer either toasted buns, cold buns or plain white bread w/ our Q. Here in NC th plain white bread (I call it colon cancer sliced thin) was a ten to one fav.

                              Go figure......

They make a toaster, looks very similiar to a panini grill, works great at toasting buns. Make sure you cover the surfaces with aluminium foil, makes cleanup much easier.
