Dutch Cuisine

I am 100% of Dutch ancestry as my parents immigrated from Rotterdam, The Netherlands, in 1950.

Am curious if any Dutch restaurants exist in the US.

This is not to be confused with Pennsylvania "Dutch" which is actually German -- an English corruption of the word "deutsch".

I know there are large Dutch communities in Michigan and in Canada so there are sources to order imported Dutch baked goods such as stroopwafels (YUM, YUM!), but I am not aware of any restaurants serving Dutch cuisine.

Would appreciate any comments.

BTW, there used to be 1 Dutch restaurant in New York City a few years ago, NL, but it is no longer in business. Here is a review of it which was printed in New York magazine:

I know that Iowa has one of the largest concentration of dutch ancestered folks in the country. It would not surprise me if there were a number of Dutch or Dutch influenced restaurants in Iowa. I understand there used to be a great dutch restaurant/bed and breakfast in Pella Iowa called the Strawtown Inn. I remember on one of my past trips I was hoping to go but they closed for renovations with promises to reopen. Well my understanding is that only the bed and breakfast reopened

I served in the Navy with someone from Holland, Michigan so I checked what was available there and came up with:

"Queen's Inn 179 Douglas Ave., Holland, MI 49422, 616-393-0310, Charming restaurant serving authentic Dutch cuisine and American favorites in an old world atmosphere. Open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m."

I'd have thought there'd be more--I counted 4 Italian places plus 2 pizza parlors in town, but at least there's one.

We do have some Belgian restaurants in NY ("Markt", "Brussels", "Petit Abeille", "Butter")and of course Indonesian.
I know, similar but not the same....

You'd think New Amsterdam would do butter, no?

(Note: I grew up in Flatlands area of Brroklyn and when I made a trip thru Holland, somehow the houses looked like that area of NY!)

From the online yellow pages on Pella:

The Royal Amsterdam Hotel ( http://www.royalamsterdam.com/ ) has J. Benjamin's casual cuisine: "Extensive menu prepared by our executive chef consists of Italian cuisine, seafood, steaks and your Dutch favorites."

As you stated the Strawtown Inn ( http://www.strawtown.com/ ) is a bed & breakfast: "In the morning, a true Dutch breakfast or a traditional bed and breakfast style awaits the guests."

There is also De Snoepwinkel which is listed one place as "candy and gifts" and another place as "dining".

Then there is the Windmill Cafe, which might or might not have Dutch foods.

By the way, if you are coming out to the midwest, you might want to stop in Fulton, IL, (on the Mississippi River) to visit one of only 2 authentic Dutch working windmills in the U.S. ( http://www.cityoffulton.us/windmill.php )

Isnn't Solvang CA mainly Danish not Dutch?

I grew up in old Ft. Orange in the one time New Netherlands, have a Dutch last name .

The Dutch food I had in the 50's and 60's was usally a mix of German and Dutch.

Many families would make Home made Doughnuts and Kuchens (Blueberry and Apple etc.)

Also there was always Smoked Salted Herring was around and Big Clam dinners called clam steams (clams and broth and fresh corn on the cob) always plenty of Beer with it.

In the fall everyone would go to Kinderhook and pick apples to make apple doughnuts,pies and applesauce. You could also get big gallons of unprocessed Cider and man was that good and really good if you would put it out on the back porch for a week or so and it would start to turn not to vinegar but just a little bit hard....good.

And there was always plenty of fresh buttermilk to quench your thirst.

Now that is the best of both worlds. Dutch San Francisco...what could be better?

The windmill IS nice (there are actually 2 of them but one hasn't yet been restored and is pretty much a wreck) but what I really enjoy is the "Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden" around the working one.

The only Dutch food for me that comes to mind is fries (potato), served with some mayonaise. (Somethin to eat on the way back from the coffee bar ya know.)
