This place is one of my top ten but not nearly as good as Lex #1 about 1/2 mile away. We (wife and both daughters) were in search of a prom dress this last Saturday and passed by the Center. I had the coarse chopped sandwich (actually chunked) while they ate an assortment of cheeseburgers and BBQ trays. They loved it. Good place w/ an extra added bonus of THE best banana split on the planet.

Been to the BBQ Center a number of times, in part because it's easy to get to, but largely because it's good. I like the sliced rather than the pulled/chopped, and the slaw is good. Not much help with this comment, but there is a place in downtown Lexington that I once found, just driving around, that I think is the best in all of Lex-style BBQ, better than Lex #1. But I can't for the life of me find it again, even in a town so small as Lexington.

Could that possible be City Barbecue? If so, quit looking. Unfortunately, City closed years ago. They were located behind the courthouse on Greensboro St. I agree. City Barbecue was consistently excellent, though parking was not always convenient.

Regarding the list from the visitors map provided by Dsorgnzd: Not all of those spots listed cook traditional Lexington-style barbecue. Even some who do are not all that good...

True. It's a list, not a recommendation. Besides, I've only tried 9 of them (so far).

I couldn't possibly try an unknown Q joint in Lexington or surrounding territory unless I happen to be in Lexington on a Sunday (Wayne Monk's Lexington # 1 is closed on Sunday).

We went the 70 miles to Lexington last Saturday to fill up on large trays of chopped "lean brown", sauce laced coleslaw, hushpuppies and sweet tea (except that our daughter opted for Cheerwine). Our son (form Brooklyn) and daughter (from Winchester, KY) were visiting and insisted that they get their "fix" at Lexington # 1 while they were in North Carolina.

Your daughter did the right thing. Cheerwine is the only pop I will drink. Makes a great ice cream also. Funny thing is they use HFCS in all their drinks EXCEPT for the 12 oz bottles which are made w/ cane sugar. There is a difference!!!!!

I tend to think of Lexington as the BBQ Mecca on the eastern portion of the US anyway. I had a great chopped plate at #1 last week and it was far better than I anticipated, and the slaw was too. Can't wait to go back.

                  Dearfolk,
If I can manage to get my weight down to 230 or thereabouts and keep my blood pressure and "numbers" in the acceptable range, I want to motor up to Lexington/Denton/Thomasville and try EVERY SINGLE BBQ place thereabouts in, say, one week to ten daze. This is bona fide research, and I might even be able to find a grant somewhere that would enable me to do this! Besides, I can write about it!
The places in Lexington, however, can keep their fries... fries are fries most of the time and nothing special (although one purist tells me that if you eat Lex 'cue, you eat fries too or you don't eat; that's an integral part of the experience). My guess is that he puts his "dip" on the fries.

I love those statutes on the corners..Do you know what are they made out of? Perhaps it's bronze?

I heard they are ripping them all out and installing gator statutes on each corner

Many of the Lexington NC places are closed on Monday. I will say they are worth the drive. IMHO they have some of the BBQ that you can find. I am not just saying that cause I am a "Carolina Gal" giggle. They really are great. Last I heard Lex #1 is still open. If they closed I think I will cry!!!

BUT--they are closed on Sunday, and many holidays.

                            Wabbit and Hillbilly -

The question is not whether Lexington #1 has closed.  It's about BBQ Center, which, IMO, is the second best BBQ joint in Lexington.  Hope it hasn't closed.

I just passed through Lexington this afternoon, found Lexington # 1 closed for an extended Christmas holiday, and checked out the BBQ Center (900 North Main Street).

Yes, it is still open and serving very good pork BBQ (along with a varied menu with many non bbq items). I ordered a small chopped tray of outside brown with "red slaw" and hushpuppies. The outside brown had a very heavy smoke flavor (which I like) and the portions were VERY generous. I probably couldn't handle a large tray. The meat was a little dry, so I had the server bring me a small cup of "dip" and a bottle of "Texas Pete" to add moisture.

Very good BBQ, in 3rd place for me behind Lex # 1 and Bridges Lodge in Shelby, NC.
