Fish and Chips HELP! Tue, 04/4/06 4:40 PM (permalink)
Last year I stayed in Sebastian Florida for a while. There is a wonderful English Pub on the main highway (at the end of a small shopping center) leading from town back to I-95. It is on the left and has a British Soccer (Footbal) theme. Can someone please tell me the name?
Their fish and chips are absolutely proper and outstanding.
Thanks, Paul (short term memory failing along with alot of other functions)

Sorry I can't help you with the name, but I can recommend a good recipe - Alton never (well, almost never) steers me wrong:

I've never been to the pub you're talking about, but it peaked my interest. I found a place in Sebastian named the Pig & Whistle Pub. Sounds English to me!

Could that be the place you went?

It is indeed the Pig & Whistle. Excellent fish & chips and the chicken wings, which are offered in 6 different styles, are pretty darned good, too. I favor the garlic/parmesan washed down with a mug of Foster's. They're closed on Monday and Tuesday. pb

There is the Pig and Whistle in Cocoa Beach, on A1A....
Total English Pub with English Fare...try their Shepards pie also..
Local hangout and Jane the British bartender Rocks.. She has been there forever and is such a joyous person. Pool tables, live music on the weekends....
          I do miss going there!

I'm not knocking the place. It sounds great. And definately my type of place. But Tara, isn't Shepherd's Pie a meal with Irish origins?
I think the Irish would have something to say if the English tried to claim the dish as their own.

While St. Patty's Day brings out the Irish beer, here are some of my usual English Beers that are most common to pubs around here:

Bass Pale Ale (good w/ Guiness or Mackeson XXX Stout)
Fuller's 1845 Ale (Nutty, and my preference over Newcastle. Plus, it's practically an English institution)
Mackeson XXX Stout (a nice smooth altrnative to Guiness)
Newcastle Brown Ale (my wife's favorite English brew)
Old Peculier Yorkshire Ale (if you've never had Yorkshire Ale, this is a good one to start on.)
Royal Oak Pale Ale (medium pale Ale, nice warm up to Whitbread and the RamRod)
Samuel Smith's India Ale (One of my favs)
Whitbread Traditional Pale Ale (Gotta have my Hops!)
Young's RamRod Special Bitter Ale (bitter? sure, but hoppy, which makes me Happy, and a little Sneezy (since me+hops = sneezing) but not definately not Grumpy.)

For really great fish (and shrimp) and chips, check out the review we did on Swiftwater Cafe, photos courtesy of queenb.

Yes, Scorereader, but the staff at Pig & Whistle do get along with the Irish.... LOL...
And their Shepards Pie is very very good.
That is why I mentioned it.

I cant say that about many restaurants where I have tried it.
                  Especially at Grittys Pub..blah..
But everything there was crappy also.. Stick to making beer, not food!

That is the one, The Pig and Whistle!!! Thank you all so much. Could not respond as I am on assignment in some place called West Virginia where the internet is as fast as the Grand Ol Opry, (whatever that is)
Hope to go back to Sebastian this year and tank up and eat.
                    Here's to you!!

If anyone is passing through Delaware, I can suggest Stoney's, on route 202, a few minutes off I-95.
It is real, not faux, pub food, and the fish and chips are a specialty
