Jim, do you know if this mix is available at Walmart?

You can't beat making your own at home, with lots of crispy edge, blackened a bit. When you can't do your own, the Aunt Jemimah frozen pancakes are good! Microwave 'em and smother 'em in butter and syrup!

Paul, I'm not sure. Walmart in my area dosen't have a large food section, just snaks I think.
In any event I buy my malt from a bakery supply here, but it can be purchased from King Arthur. I also use it for some bread baking.
The mixes you may look for are either Carbon's golden malted pancake mix or Stonewall Kitchens pancake mix. An online source that is fairly good, reasonable prices is www.spoon.com
Hope that's of help to you. Chow Jim

          Best pancakes I've ever had:

Dallas - Benedict's, Belt Line and Inwood in Addison.
L.A.: Harbor House, PCH in Sunset Beach.
Washington, DC: Metro 29 Diner, Lee Highway and Glebe Rd., Arlington, VA.

As chains go, the Original Pancake House beats the batter out of IHOP.

I'll vote for the Original Pancake House, too! We go to the one here in San Diego and it's great!

Has anyone mentioned Polly's Pancake Parlor in New Hampshire yet? The pancakes infused with coconut shavings are the best I've ever had.

I like medium diameter pancakes. Thinner and crispy around the edges, but tomorrow I'm making blueberry. Blueberries are super sweet right now.

I like the pancakes at Wags Restaurant in Tucson; thin as a crepe and as big as the plate

Having not had every pancake in the USA, I cannot profess to these being the best, but these were the best I had in 2007.

Those are some seriously fine looking pancakes you have there! When I ate at Cozy Corner in '05, I foolishly went for an omelette. Now I know what I am getting next time.

Here is one of my favorites, the Strawberry Hotcakes (obviously crepe style) from Pamela's in Pittsburgh.

Seriously, those are some fine looking cakes in their own right, and you have access to them all the time. My trip to Chicago is a rarity - so my wait between pancakes like that will be great!

Stopped by Polly's Pancake Parlor in Sugar Hill, NH recently.   We were VERY disappointed.  I could name a dozen or more places in New England that consistently serve equal-to-better pancakes at a significantly lower price.  Their six three inch pancakes for $8.19 are actually equal in size to about two five inch pancakes - a small, short stack anywhere else.   The pancakes weren't bad, just way over priced, especially considering the minimal amount of additives where I'm not sure they broke up a half pecan per pancake.  The amount of blue berries in their blueberry pancakes were equally lacking.  Even allowing perhaps $2 for their pure maple syrup, I figure they were still at least 20-30% over priced.  Coffee was very good, but at $2?

A few superior places include Huckleberry's in Ogunquit ME, Maine Diner in Wells ME, Brunswick Diner in Brunswick ME, Claudia's in Voluntown CT, Jiggers in East Greenwich RI, Modern Diner in Pawtucket RI, etc........

I do admit, however, that it seems pancakes outside of New england do tend to be lacking.

I always really enjoy the pancakes at Polly's, but the price does border on ridiculous.

Best place on my list will always be Al's Breakfast in Minneapolis (where most of the staff still recognizes me, even though I only go about once or twice a year when I'm in town).  I am forever thankful that they gave their recipe to Guy Fieri for his book, since now I can recreate a pale imitation of their "Wally Blues" when I'm craving them.

Pancakes are definitely a bit of a religious item, with several schools of thought about what makes a good pancake, since at least one of the places mentioned here (Modern Diner) has pancakes I don't like (although I otherwise love the Modern)

The Modern Diner is definitely in my top 10 for favorite pancakes although I haven't had any there in a while, however my all time favorites are still in Vermont, both the blueberry pancakes at the Blue Benn Diner in Bennington and The Berry Berry Pancakes at Dots in Wilmington.
I will be in Minneapolis in August, but won't be going to Al's, it's just one of those places I simply have no desire to check out since I'll only be in town for a few days.

I have never enjoyed blueberry pancakes more than at the Original Pancake House.

As far as mixes I think Hungry Jack makes the best product:

I recently had my first ( but definitely not last ) breakfast of pancakes and bacon at Walker Brothers Pancake House in Wilmette IL, and I loved every bite of it. Just as good if not better than what my mother made almost every Sunday morning of my childhood ( sorry Mom! )

I keep trying to go to the Blue Benn, but both times I've visited they've been unexpectedly closed (kitchen fire one time, power outage another).

I'll add Dots to my list for my next trip to the area.

Some of the best pancakes I've ever had were at Brewer's, in Hamilton, OH on East Ave.  definitely not a good part of town, andI've only had breakfast there.  But, the pancakes are outstanding.

My favorite ever is Original pancake house 49ers pancakes. They are real thin and melt in your mouth. This is by far my favorite mix all natural and better for you than commercial mixes. I can not have links yet but google Logan Turnpike Mill and try the whole wheat ones. Very light

I won't even fathom trying to make a list that includes a wide area, like a region or the entire country. It's way too broad. But, in DC - I love the pancakes at the Market Lunch at Eastern MArket (Cap Hill). This place makes buttermilk pancakes that are fluffy AND filling - light, yet hearty. They also make the only scrapple I can eat in DC. I don't do that often, but they can do it.

And in my home town of Syracuse NY, Nick's Place - which, like the market lunch here in DC, is a b'fast/lunch joint. Open M-F for the downtown work crowd. It doesn't surpise me much that I love the pancakes from Nicks -  I pretty much love all the food at Nick's Place - AND, the new owner Johnny Fratto, has kept Nick's great tradition that has stemmed from the 40's, and brought in some new ideas - but yet, the new ideas fit right into the 40's diner surroundings. His four egg omelet may bring Guy Fiere to Syracuse - or Dinosaur BBQ will, and Nicks gives him reason to stay! Either way - Nick's is my preferred Syracuse b'fast depot. And Market Lunch is the one for DC.

                                                the ancient mariner

I "stack" my pancakes up against any. Folks have come from far and wide (well a few blocks anyhow) to join in the joy of sitting down to a breakfast feast highlighted by pancakes A La Mariner. (Actually they are very good.) A recipe given to me by a Lady (I only accept recipes from Ladies)who swears she got it directly from Aunt Jamima herself. Easter is not a pancake day (Ham and eggs on Easter)----- but the following week---Easter Plus One-----will be pancake and sausage Sunday. I can hardly wait.

Aunt Jamima is a fictional character created from an old Minstrel Show. The original inspiration for the Aunt Jemima character was a white male in blackface, who some have described as a German immigrant.
